I personally added chisel and carpenter's blocks to my MW2. Without those, I'd say Geostrata's stones are going to be useful.

In terms of themes, I veer towards fantasy/medieval style builds, as they seem more fitting. You could set up an overgrown cottage in the woods for Witchery stuff, a thaumaturge's tower etc.

Another idea I had, but was always too lazy to make, was a large city populated with golems, Pechs, and other neutral mobs. You could have an artificer's quarter (Thaumcraft), a Temple District (Blood Magic), a sprawling Botanical Garden (Witchery and Magical Crops) and in the centre a Mage's Tower (For Ars Magica, Mystcraft Books for warping around in a library-style room). You could have the golems set up to carry items around from Building to building to give the impression of a busy city, use warded paving stones to trap Pech as shopkeepers...

Maybe one of these days I'll get round to it myself.

Have yourself a "private" dungeon... Just with Thaumium floors, greatwood walls, some sort of dark red ceiling.... And have all your thaumcraft stuff in the dungeon... it sorta looks nice :)

Floating islands. Underwater globe. Enchanted treehouse.

Magic is pretty versatile for build types, actually. You can build your base fifty feet in the air and say "Screw it, it's a magic house."
Yea pretty much. My main base where I'm for the most part focused on magic mods is a giant Aladdin themed sandstone palace which will (when I get around to it) be lit by nitor

Just several floating blocks that could once f been a tower, but have been torn off and are free floating, with only one or two floors having survived, as the rest is lying about on the ground

(Such verbal diarrhoea)

Create a religion, with a symbol and such and make it's "Cathedral", that's what I did with Blood Magic, I made up a religion based on it and made kind of a city based around how people would feel if their god was feeding of their vital force, using some bloody and messy structures in every road to get it. It was a bad god, it was a bad treatment, but it gave me a lot of ideas to build because it wasn't just a concept, but also I could include what people would feel and how someone could achieve the religions goals.. I don't mean to insult any religious people here, but my concept of religion is that it was a building tool, a tool made to create and destroy empires, create and destroy civilizations, a tool of progress (In any direction you want, even backwards) and when you think about it, religion (And most than all, the effects on people and how those effects are applied) is one of the best building tools there is in minecraft, just my opinion.

Why have I not thought of this?

Actually, better question, why have you not told me this?!
Dunno. I used to tell that to people all the time on my old vanilla server. They'd like my builds but I was just copying Lego sets from the 80s. Its better than trying to make a Minecraft building from a real life photo. Lego being blocky already really helps you to picture how to build them in game.

I had the same idea when I still ran a bukkit server, but soon forgot when I transitioned to modded minecraft. So many toys to play with.
