I, and, judging by posts in this thread, others have had issues with interminable hangs during loading due to out of date version checking. I am not sure if it truly is interminable, but it was on the same step for about 30 minutes when I gave up.
-Dsun.net.client.defaultConnectTimeout=1000
edit:
I just had a good idea, and it seem to work at least for me. Here is an even better solution for the long loading problem:
In FTB Launcher go to options tab, hit "advanced options" and in additional java parameters addThis should solve the issue by reducing the timeout time to 1 second.Code:-Dsun.net.client.defaultConnectTimeout=1000
It's scheduled to be released a week after the last person asks about it.
Yeah.
In the FTB Launcher click download server. Then launch the executable that comes with it. This will launch the server. If you are playing on you LAN you can probably just give them the computer the server is running on's IP. If not, then you'll have to do some fancy port forwarding, look that up for your specific router.

And show us what happens on your friend's PC. Your friend stating that it only shows 'pause' is not enough to me. He might be ignoring something that he might think its not important.
