My blast furnace is sulking.

I have a coke oven slowly feeding coal coke into the central block underneath, and a stack of iron blocks awaiting conversion to steel blocks. So far, so good.

Every so often though I notice that the blast furnace is no longer a blast furnace, the window block at the bottom has reverted to a regular blast furnace block. I have to crowbar out a block and put it back so the whole contraption evolves into a blast furnace again. Whenever I do this, the iron and steel blocks are still there, but there's no coal coke and the progress bar is always at zero. I'm not surprised the coal coke is gone because the blast furnace uses it faster than the coke oven generates them, but as it takes ages for the progress bar to complete an entire steel block conversion I am surprised that every time it's always at the start.

So - has anyone else experienced this? If so, is there a known fix I can apply?

Thanks!

The chunk it is located in is probably unloading. If it's on a chunk boundary this may also happen. Chunk load any chunks your furnace is in, and it *should* stop being weird.

Chunks load and unload all the time. The issue is the blast furnace is constructed across chunk boundaries. Check by pressing f7 twice (assuming NIE is installed with default bindings), and chunks will be demarcated with green lines.
All multiblock machines are prone to being 'disassembled' if they cross a chunk boundary as, if the player moves 10 chunks away one of the chunks will be unloaded, and if something happens to the structure part that is still loaded it will notice it does not form a complete structure any more.

One solution is to use chunk loaders. Another is to use f7 to identify chunk boundaries and build(/rebuild) machines so that they always fit completely within a single chunk.

Can confirm :) It's across a chunk border dammit. Someone should write a mod that puts wheels under an instance so you can move it around ... like chests, moving those are a real pain, at least the furnace is a knock-down-put-up affair. All I lose is use on a crowbar.

Still, life lesson learned - plan one's base of operations with a little more care next time.

Thanks peeps!

Funky Locomotion? Remain in Motion?

I personally use a helm from Archimedes ships to shuttle structures around my base. The only issue is creating a clearance space around the thing to move...

Funky Locomotion is part of Direwolf20, which I am currently using, so I'll check that out, thanks.

Wife : "Why do you waste so much time on Minecraft?"
Me : "Waste? I learn something new every day!"

Well, I was j/k - she loves minecraft but has never played it on the grounds she knows she'd be forever unable to stop. And she has to spend every non-working minute at the moment finishing her novel. If that sells well, I'll quit my job to become a kept man and will spend my time between minecraft and being husbanded so hard.
