I've built a Bio Reactor (the one on this page http://ftbwiki.org/BioReactor ) and if I were to throw in, say, oak saplings, it purees them happily into biofuel.

However, if I give these saplings to a Multifarm set up as a managed arboretum and wait a while, it will eventually have sapling excess and start spitting them out. These excess saplings seem to be incompatible with the reactor - I chuck 'em in, but nothing happens. Anyone know why this is and if so how to fix it?

Thanks!

The bio-reacter is looking for specific items, the multifarm converts the vanilla saplings into forestry versions, which then MFR knows nothing about. There is no fix unless MFR adds compatibility with Forestry.

MFR planter and harvester! (AKA MFR treefarm)
upside is, a 9x9 farm with a fertilizer is VERY fast when properly powered.
you will NEED a DSU for all the wood you get off that thing. 11K in less than an hour.
decent sapling and apple rate as well.
i just ran the harvester output by the planter, its only getting about half the saplings, and its still amazingly fast.
turn all that wood into charcoal with an induction furnace, you have infintite boiler fuel.

Sorta thread hijacking, I hope the OP doesn't mind (Or at least will find it useful).

I have been really interested in building a MFR Bio-reactor/Generator setup using MFR Planters, Fertilizers & Harvesters but I have been COMPLETELY unable to find any information on what the Bio-Reactor will accept and what it wont, also to a less extent, what fertilizer will work on and what wont.

Does anyone know of a list of items that can be accepted by the Bio-Reactor?

P.S I have tried Google, I have searched these forums and I have browsed FTBwiki.org, feed-the-best.wikia and the Tekkit wikis all to no avail. Any help is appreciated.

Another tangent to the thread: has anyone studied how efficient a multi farm is with advanced saplings compared to a fertilized farm? I think it'd make for an interesting comparison, say, mahogany multi farm vs mfr oaks.

I'm curious whether the long term forestry gains are valuable enough, and if allowing these with mfr setups would be game breaking with the late game saplings.

I have done a some research and the advanced saplings will always beat an MFR farm if you are looking at saplings alone.

The strengths of the Bio-Reactor come when you have 9 different bio inputs. I don't know exact figures but 1 Bio-Reactor with a continuous input of 9 different bio matter can support 8 BioFuel Generators running at maximum capacity. In 1.4.7 the BioFuel Generator generated a 1,333 MJ/bucket of BioFuel at a rate of 16 MJ/t but I have no idea what this changed to in the latest version, but it is probably a safe bet to assume it did change.

I realise not a great answer but hopefully someone wiser than me will be able to fill in the gaps.

bioreactor takes
saplings (each variety of sapling is a different reactor fuel)
bonemeal
seeds
most vanilla plants
does NOT take:
apples
flowers
pumpkins/melons (you can use the seeds)

fertilizer should burn forestry/IC2/MFR fertilizers to accelerate anything you can put in the planter.

This is sort of the crux of the issue and one of the reasons Forestry and MFR can co-exist. MFR's system works really well and the fuel burns fast and hot, which means its a fairly easy system to set up. The advantage of the forestry approach is that it can output a pretty absurd sum of total energy if you put the time in to tree breeding (including very high yield in small spaces).

When I say absurd, I mean it's not hard to end up with trees that yield so much biofuel that you will probably never be able to build enough boilers to actually tap it all. Dear RR testers: this statement is not a challenge. Please have mercy.

If it's actually worthwhile to do this is sort of up in the air. It's very easy to get biogas engines up and running fast, though.

Me again - after some tinkering, I found that you can make it work with multifarms, provided you are growing Carrots and/or potatoes as these don't go all forestcraft wibblywoo and output as normal carrots/potatoes, which are accepted by the bioreactor.

It's now running my base.

It should only affect trees, so you should be fine with any crops. The tree breeding is what makes the multifarms tree exclusive to forestry machines. I think the only crop breeding is, surprisingly, associated with ic2 or something.

ic2 crops paired with the mfr harvester is a decent way to go for the vanilla crops (wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, carrots, potatoes, netherwart) to get a lot of types easily. The crops eliminate the need for a planter. The range upgrade on the harvester is a great way to use normal vanilla growth rates to your advantage in a setup without a fertilizer.
