Magnopolis

epocholis_by_jonasdero-d4ca97z.jpg

Ever since the earth was devastated by meteor showers, the citizens of Magnopolis have stood alone. Technologically advanced, cybernetic modification is endemic in the city, and even the poorest have implant computers that hook them up to the urban network. Protected from damage by the forcefield erected by the Magnus Institute before the bombardment, the city stands as a shimmering beacon of hope to all survivors – at least, according to the news.

The truth is, as ever, somewhat more nuanced. The upper districts are indeed prosperous and everything anyone could want. Quality of living is high, many have high paid jobs in the technological industries and many of the menial tasks are taken care of by the advanced constructs created by the Institute. Conversely, the lower districts, called the Undercity, are noticeable different. Dark, dingy streets, deprived of sun by the upper districts, where the only illumination comes from the flickering neon signs advertising dingy little shops, tiny diners, and other businesses both legal and illegal. Wages are low, and housing is of poor quality. Diseases can rip through streets, and what few doctors exist are prohibitively expensive for most citizens.

2Rcc4.jpg

The Director of the Magnus Institute, having been voted into power 30 years ago at the time of the meteor strikes, rules the city with an iron fist. Discrimination is rife, and roving groups of droids search for any who break the oppressive rulings or who speak against the Institute's rule.

The Rules of the Institute:

  1. Do not kill, steal, or otherwise do harm to another citizen or their property.
  2. Do not hack into the implant of another.
  3. Do not damage or interfere with Institute property.
  4. Do not venture onto the streets of the Undercity after 6pm.
  5. Do not act contrary to the interests of Magnopolis and its citizens.
  6. Offensive weapons such as blades and firearms are illegal.

Despite the harsh restrictions placed on the citizenry, some have begun to band together. A renegade group has formed with the sole intention of bringing down the rule of the Institute. The Partition has begun a brutal guerilla campaign against the forces of the Institute within the bowels of the Undercity. Fighting using an array of both legal and illegal implants, the Partition have pushed the droid forces out of several areas. In response, Institute patrols have been intensified, and the Institute's own human operatives are preparing to move in to combat the renegades. The news reports their reckless disregard for civilian lives and property, and the loss and injury incurred by those who encountered them.

The truth, as ever, is somewhat more nuanced.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this RP, you will play as either a low ranking member of the Institute or the Partition. You will have a total of 25 points to distribute across the following stats:

Power: Determines physical strength and damage
Precision: Determines attack hit chance
Durability: Provides resistance to physical damage
Health: Determines the amount of damage that can be taken before shutdown/death
Agility: Determines chance to avoid attacks
Hack: Determines network attack power, used for abilities
Firewall: Provides resistance to network attack damage.

You will also be able to use, either through training and prior experience or cybernetic augmentation, up to 3 abilities. I'm leaving the design of these open, however I reserve the right to buff or nerf the implementation of these abilities at any time.

This is an RP in which PvP as well as PvE combat will occur. Character death is a very real possibility. All combat will be resolved via dicerolls, so collaboration with a GM is required for the resolution of combat. With the explosion of technology and cybernetic approaches, weaponry is not as advanced as it might be. Conventional blades and firearms are the most commonly available, though still very illegal. Laser-based firearms also exist, but are significantly harder to acquire.

Meet your first NPC!

Name: Ravyn Portwyn-Elise

Age: 19

Affiliation: Partition

Appearance:
68q76Sq.jpg

Personality: Ravyn is, essentially, a spoilt brat. Rash and impulsive, he dislikes being overruled, and wants everything his own way. If you're willing to go along with his reckless ideas, he's your greatest friend. If you disagree with him, he's going to be the biggest irritation you encounter.

Backstory:
Ravyn was born into an affluent family in the Upper District. His parents were somewhat aloof, and Ravyn was often left with a nanny or, more frequently, droid caretakers. Growing up knowing no physical hardship, he lived a life many would envy. However, his parents continued to treat him coldly, a fact which irked him more and more as he grew older. Eventually, upon hearing of the Partition, Ravyn decided to leave home and fight against the systems which had raised him. Not out of any feeling of outrage at the inequality, but more for more petulant, personal reasons.
Life in the Undercity was a culture shock and, to this day, Ravyn still remains disgusted at the conditions (again, in a snobbish way as opposed to any sympathy). The Partition, mistrusting him due to his origins, deploy him on the very front lines, ensuring that the unit he works with has no contact with other units to minimise the amount he knows. To this day, Ravyn hasn't figured out that he's being treated as an expendable pawn, assigning himself much higher status than he actually holds.

Stats:
Power: 3
Precision: 6
Durability: 2
Health: 2
Agility: 4
Hack: 5
Firewall: 3

Abilities:
Motorference (Scales with Hack): Ravyn hacks into his opponent's mind, interfering with their muscular control. If successful, target is at -2 Agility until the end of their next turn.

Distortion (Scales with Hack): Ravyn hacks into his opponent's mind, distorting their vision. If successful, target is at -2 Precision until the end of their next turn.

Penetrating Sight: Ravyn's cybernetic right eye scans the opponent for weak spots. If Ravyn's Precision roll is 2x the target's Agility roll, Ravyn's Power is increased by 1 for that attack.

Equipment: 2x Undercity Special Revolvers, Combat knife

Name: Karl Marquese

Age: 43

Affiliation: Magnus Institute

Appearance:
HardReset-KeyArt.png

Personality: Karl is the enforcer of the Institute. Contemptuous of others, he treats most people he encounters with disdain. Lacking in sympathy, empathy, or morals, Karl is the man who the Institute turns to when issues arise. He is currently in charge of the campaign against the Partition. He has a thuggish and belligerent attitude, fully willing to give others a fight if he feels they ask for it.

Backstory:
Karl's early life is somewhat murky. Some speculate he was a child of a researcher at the Institute, others suggest that he was picked up from the streets of the Undercity. What is known is that he was heavily augmented from an early age. As he grew older, he began working for the Institute, dealing with pockets of rebellion before they erupted. Over two decades of fieldwork, the legends surrounding him grew, as did the horror stories. Allegations of torture and summary public executions abounded, though few could trace them back to their source. Eventually, the Institute decided to deal with increasing unrest by giving him a high-ranking security role. With Karl off the streets, seditious elements began to regroup and, under his very nose and to his great anger, the Partition arose.

Stats:
Power: 8
Precision: 8
Durability: 6
Health: 7
Agility: 6
Hack: 6
Firewall: 10

Abilities:
Jammers (Scales with Firewall): Should a Hack roll from an opponent fail, that opponent is paralysed until the start of their following turn. Whilst paralysed, Agility is 0.

Crushing Blow: Karl launches a heavy attack, with +3 Power and -3 Precision.

Cleave (Scales with Power): Karl sweeps his baton in front of him with -2 Power and +2 Precision. AoE.

Equipment: IN-KMS Shock Baton (Reduces Hack and Firewall by 1 on every hit until the end of combat), custom-made; IN-KMF Magnum pistol, custom-made.

Question!
Can abilities also do things outside of combat? Or do can they do both?
They can have effects outside of combat. I'm leaving the specification fairly open, but I will be trying to make sure no character is too OP (apart from the Commanders, who are OOP) :p

Name: Elin DuVares

Age: 28

Affiliation: Magnus Institute

Appearance:
147383.jpg

Personality:
Elin is a caring individual. Sometimes that caring manifests itself as kicking someone's arse because they screwed up. When she chews someone out, it's because she's concerned for their safety and the safety of those around them. Elin firmly believes that the rule of the Institute, though harsh, is vital for the security of all citizens of Magnopolis. She fears that without Institute forces to keep control, the explosion in crime would throw the city into anarchy, putting the welfare of the populace in jeopardy. Though she can sympathise with the Partition's views, she believes that its cause has also attracted many who just seek violence for the sake of violence, and feels that changing the Institute from within is the only good way to improve the lives of the citizenry.

Backstory (at least one paragraph):
Elin grew up in the Undercity, in one of the nicer districts. People there were somewhat better off, and life was reasonable. Elin grew up a happy and loved child. As she grew older however, crime levels in the Undercity began rising. Her area was a common target thanks to the comparative wealth of those living there. It reached the point where people were afraid to leave their homes due to the density and frequency of attacks. In response, the Institute was requested for aid, and sent in droid forces. This intervention made the area safe again, until the droids were recalled to fight a small uprising. In retaliation for requesting Institute aid, the area was stormed by an angry mob. Houses were set alight, people were killed, belongings were ruined. Some managed to flee to the Institute's protection, Elin and her mother among them. Elin enrolled into the Institute security forces, in order to prevent an incident like that ever occurring again.

Following the battle with Godetzka, Elin narrowly survived thanks to Dan's intervention. However, the damage to her organs was heavy, as well as the burns afflicted to her spinal cord by the overheating neural overclocker. She is currently conscious and semi-mobile, though she is restricted to a wheelchair. As a result, she is currently on hiatus from active duty.

Stats:
Power: 2
Precision: 5
Durability: 7
Health: 6
Agility: 6
Hack: 2
Firewall:7

Abilities:
Subdermal disruptor field: When Elin is wounded (Health below max), she gains +2 Durability and +2 Firewall

Medical Nanobots (Scales with target Durability): Elin can inject nanobots into a target, healing them.

Disruption Sphere: (Scales with durability) Elin can overpower her disruptor field to generate a sphere around here. Allies within the sphere gain +1 Durability and Firewall. This cancels any buffs from her disruptor field that are already active, and damages Elin for 1HP upon activation.

Equipment: IN-RA9 Assault Rifle, IN-PR5 Repeater Pistol

Look behind you
Name: Syderis (Sy) Velos

Age: 28

Affiliation: Partition

Appearance:
Ghost-Recon-Future-Soldier.jpg

Personality: Sy doesn't have split personality disorder, but someone might confuse him for one who does. Normally, he's a man with good morals, and he's pretty serious, though might have the occasional joke about, a bit of banter. He'll try and do the right thing, give help when needed, be a decent person.
In combat, though, he becomes far, far more serious, almost cold, doing whatever he can to survive, though being far away from his target at the time means he rarely has to resort to such. His focus has been described as terrifying, having an utter determination that this person's head will explode, and today.

Backstory: Syderis was once a soldier, serving in the fight against the Partition. He would set up a good distance away from his target, wait for them to get in a good enough position, then bang, they suddenly have fewer heads than they woke up with. He even worked underneath Carl Marquese himself as his best sniper, soon enough after his talent was recognised.
He began to realise, though, that these weren't bad people. Many cowered as they were cornered by the soldiers of Magnus, and he could see, even from far away, the fear in their eyes. He sympathised, and began sparing as many as he could get away with, soon enough managing to escape, and join the Partition.
Joining wasn't simple. He had to conceal who he was, but at least none of them would know him from his appearance, being a sniper in the shadows as he was. To this day, none of the other Partition know.

Stats:
Power: 9
Precision: 6
Durability: 4
Health: 5
Agility: 5
Hack: 0
Firewall: 3

Abilities:

Full metal jacket:
Sy can use armour-piercing rounds that lessen the enemy's durability by 2 for his attack. Two-turn cooldown.

Capacitor charge:
Sy gains +2 power to his next shot. This may stack. Does not force exit from stealth. Cannot be used on the same round as anything else.

Stealth mode:
For three turns, Sy is in stealth. This is forcibly exited if an enemy succeeds a hack check while looking for him in their line of sight. While in this mode, he can only be seen by said hack check, and gains +2 damage if any attack succeeds. Also exited by attacking.

Equipment: Silenced .50 Calibre IN-SC coilgun customised version, IN-PRev revolver customised version, combat knife

Name: Wyatt

Age: 35

Affiliation: Partition

Appearance (Image, description or both):
Wyatt's head show clear signs that his skull got broken in the past. He wears a dark cap whenever possible to try to hide it but without much effect.
He is long and skinny, likes to wear dark clothes and has brown eyes.

Personality:
Wyatt doesn't like to talk to others, rather avoid crowds and has a chaotic mind.
It isn't uncommon for him to talk to his "pet" and he wouldn't be surprised if others thinks he is crazy thanks to that especially since some of the damage from the accident is clearly visible. Not that he cares about it though.

Backstory (at least one paragraph):
Wyatt used to be a rich engineer for the Institute. He was unaware of how bad people really had it and often said that it was their own fault.
He hated the Partition, thinking they where just useless people wanting money they didn't deserve. He believed that if they just went ahead and got work their problems would be over.
The only "good" thing he could say over the Partition is that its because of their stupidity that he was more needed then ever, thus able to get more money.

His life however drastically changed one day when one of the things he worked on exploded.
Although the explosion didn't kill anyone it did cause serious damage to both Wyatt and the surroundings. The explosion broke Wyatt's skull and caused serious brain damage. As a result Wyatt has no memories of hist past. Most of his implants also couldn't stand the explosion.

With no memories of his past and most people thinking he didn't survive in the first place. Wyatt was forced to live in the lower districts.
The only thing left of who he once was is the fact that he can still create amazing devices and implants, however he does this on his intuition and can't explain anymore why something does or doesn't work.

His only hope to ever find out who he was was an implant that controlled an AI. However once he repaired it he discovers that the data it stored was lost and the AI was useless on its own.

At this point he gave up all hope to discover who he once was. Depression fell over Wyatt and every day it became worse and worse. Until some day by pure luck he found something to fix another implant he wanted to fix for so long. At this point he had no idea what this particular implant would do only that it is connected to the AI in some way.

When he managed to repair it he discovered that although it did not do what he was looking for it did something better. It made the AI able to have a "body" of its own. It made it able to interact with the world and so much more. It may not revealed his past but it did give Wyatt something else: it shows what he was and still is capable of doing, hope, something he can talk to and something able to give order in his chaotic mind.

Eventually Wyatt stops looking for the past and focuses more on his future. He joins the Partition not because he wants to fight or kill but to show what he can do, to not feel useless ever again.

Stats (25 total):
Power: 4
Precision: 4
Durability: 2
Health: 4
Agility: 2
Hack: 4
Firewall:6

Abilities:
creature.shutdown(): Wyatt "kills" the creature by disallowing energy to go to the implant causing it to exist. This power can be used to strengthen the firewall or help Wyatt hacking (in total 3 points go up ). The creature can easily be brought back at the cost of the bonus.
creature.form()/creature.deform():When the creature forms it becomes possible for it to interact with the world, making it able to attack and increasing how far it can go away from Wyatt. However while formed it is a weak spot(firewall -3). If the creature glitches while formed it automatically deforms itself to prevent damage and any action it did is canceled .
CPU.overload(): Wyatt causes the CPU of a device/implant to become overloaded bringing it to an halt.

Equipment: Home made taser (Can be used to kill but due to the energy needed will cause the creature to glitch well using it). And a normal knife.

Backstory (at least one paragraph):
Wyatt spend most of the two months working on various projects and searching for the needed components for them. One of them would have been used to improve the AI in various ways. However before it was done it broke. Wyatt was asleep during that time as it happened, the cause seems to be that most components suddenly got way more electricity then they could handle, some even melted as a result. Wyatt has yet to figure out what exactly caused this damage.

The AI also didn't sit still even though it discovered it screwed up when writing the malware for INA causing the most important thing of it to not be usable. It is now almost done with the second version of said malware, and its basically ready to infect INA. It also got a new toy to play with during combat, electrical discharge.

Stats (31 total):

Power: 5
Precision: 4
Durability: 4
Health: 6
Agility: 2
Hack: 5
Firewall:5

Abilities:
creature.form()/creature.deform():When the creature forms it becomes possible for it to interact with the world, making it able to attack and increasing how far it can go away from Wyatt. The creature has base stats of 1 and Wyatt can spend his own stats to increase them. If the creature is deformed using creature.deform all points are restored to Wyatt. Cooldown until it can be formed again is (1+x) where x is total health lost. If the creature gets killed it has a cooldown of 3 turns and only half of the stats are returned to Wyatt and the rest restore at a rate of 1 each turn.

creature.discharge() Basic attack but uses hack instead, if the creature is formed it gets transfered to the creature making it unavailable for Wyatt. If the creature deforms Wyatt can use it again.
shield.powerOn() With the same technology that is used to give the AI its form Wyatt can make a shield around a person. It can also be used to restore some of the creatures health if the creature has been formed.
Equipment: Home made taser . And a normal knife.

(Might/probably change some things in the future, editor removed the bolds for some reason)
Name: Wyatt

Age: 22

Affiliation: Partition

Appearance (Image, description or both):

Backstory (at least one paragraph):
Most of the memories of Wyatt have been wiped out due to what he believes was an accident.
He doesn't remember his real name, his friends(if he had any in the first place) or where he used to live. This accident also caused most of his implants to be broken beyond repair or to malfunction.
Wyatt did manage to repair some. However talking with him about technology isn't easy, the accident caused him to forget the technical terms and names of components.
One of the implants he managed to salvage causes him to see a creature controlled by what he guesses is an AI. He has no idea what the original purpose was of it but he is happy it exist as it is the closest thing to a friend he has at this point.

Right now he lives a poor life, not able to truly show what he is capable off he feels his talent goes to waste as time passes.

Stats (25 total):
Power: 2
Precision: 3
Durability: 2
Health: 4
Agility: 2
Hack: 6
Firewall:6

Abilities:
creature drain: Wyatt "kills" the creature by disallowing energy to go to the implant causing it to exist. This power can be used to strengthen the firewall or help Wyatt hacking (in total 3 points go up divided between firewall or hacking). The creature can easily be brought back removing the bonus.
Scout: Wyatt sends the creature out to places he normally can't reach(for example through a closed door) to literally scout ahead. However as he communicates with the creature through normal sound it needs to get back before Wyatt knows what the creature saw. (if Wyatt activates creature drain before the creature is back the creature forgets what it saw. Can't be activated while creature drain is active)
Good companion: While the creature is close by it helps Wyatt to remember things/focus, making it easier for him to hack (hack+1, close by means being able to talk to it)

Equipment: Home made taser (Can be used to kill but due to the energy needed the creature will glitch out and if it was scouting forget what it saw) and a normal knife.
What I will say is that Wyatt is currently the world's squishiest meatshield. To use Hack to attack, you need an ability that works off of it (implant based). Otherwise, you'll work off strength. Wyatt has ridiculous Hack stats and can't use them at all.

ok, was not satisfied with the scout ability in the first place, so I probably will rework scout and good companion then

Name: Leopold Cinder

Age: 18

Affiliation: Partition

Appearance:
ce106ea214.png

(courtesy rinmarugames.com, slightly edited for a less cartoony look)

Personality: Leopold is quiet and strategic, not given much to emotional outbreaks lately after his initial bouts of wishing vengeance upon the Institute. Since then, he's been thinking about how to best reconcile his feelings about the Institute with a plan for the redemption of the Undercity, and whether or not the Partition is a "good" force for change, after all. He doesn't talk a lot with other Partitioners, but those few he likes will sometimes get him to open up.

Backstory:
Leopold (or Leo, as his few acquaintances know him) grew up in the less violent parts of the Undercity, but would occasionally leave home and venture into the darker and deeper corners of the city to escape his nagging family. One day, when he was trying to scavenge some electronic goodies from a vendor, an Institute alarm was activated for an unknown reason on a higher level of the city, and the SeppukuSentry droids crashed into various hovels in the Undercity. One of them was housing Leo's family. Of course, once this incident was made public, the Institute blew it off as a "regrettable incident, but hardly to be expected". No apologies were made to the citizens who were injured or had died, and no aid was sent to the bereaved. Since this incident, Leo has held an intense dislike for the Institute, who did nothing to help his family and everything to harm them. Leo recently joined the Partition as an attempt to fight back against the Institute's oppression, and bring the Institute's power under control, but has since seen that many other Partitioners have only joined for wanton fighting and destruction.

Stats (25 26 total):
Power: 4
Precision: 4
Durability: 4
Health: 3
Agility: 5
Hack: 3
Firewall: 3

Abilities:
Pyro Punch: Leo's glove can become cloaked in flame, or shoot a variable-width and -distance fireball or stream of flames. Limited use time. (Scales with Hack. 2-turn cooldown.)
Superdermal cyberskin: a network of electricity across Leo's skin can be activated to protect against weak attacks and projectiles (+2 dur if at full health, +1 if not). It's physically draining to keep up however, and for extended periods of use Leo's agility will slowly drop. Following 2 turns of activation, Agility drops by 1 each turn. Following deactivation, Agility is restored at 1 point per turn. 2 turn cooldown from deactivation.
Energy exchange: Leo can sacrifice health for agility, and vice versa. This allows him to heal in safe places, or escape from a brewing fight.

Equipment:
Holostylo: hologram-enabled pen, useful for drawing up plans and generally mucking about. Can leave holograms in the air for a short time.
Shocksaber: a sword that sizzles with several hundred of joules of electricity. Can be deactivated to save power, and folds up into the hilt for easier storage. Leo prefers to wear it on his shoulder while at the Partition's headquarters, to be a more imposing presence, but while in the field, it fits neatly on his belt. It's quiet, and perfect for stealthy operations.
Powerpalm: A cybernetic glove on Leo's left hand, with muscle-sensitive precision controls. Currently has the "pyro punch" attachment. Can be further upgraded in the future, maybe. Also increase the grip strength and dexterity of his hand slightly, allowing for more precise movements, such as when tinkering with electronic devices or small objects.

Why the addition of mature content in CAPS? That's making me suspicious of what I'd be getting into.
Basically swearing, potential for extreme violence, drug use, and sexual themes. One of the NPCs I'm working will showcase some of the seedier aspects of life in the Undercity. Due to the setting, I feel the need to be able to portray the darker, grimier sides of life in the Undercity, and the drug dealers, pimps and common thugs and psychos are a part of that.

There will not be any graphic sexual content however. I'm operating a 'fade to black' policy on that front. In addition, anyone trying to force another players character into doing something they aren't comfortable with will be surprised by one of the Commander level NPCs (Karl for example) and butchered 10 ways to Sunday.

The reason I put the tag up is I know the moderators do try to keep the forums more family friendly, and so I thought I would clearly label it for information.

I think I may have gotten a little wacky with Leo's abilities (especially the plasmid...) and that protosuit. Let me know if I should dial-back or remove them.

Name
: Leopold Cinder

Age: 18

Affiliation: Partition

Appearance (Image, description or both):

Stats (25 total):
Power: 4
Precision: 4
Durability: 3
Health: 3
Agility: 5
Hack: 3
Firewall: 3

Abilities:
Pyro plasmid: Leo can breathe fire!! For a short time, at least. Since he's had one plasmid adapt to his body already, he can acquire more, perhaps, in the future...
Superdermal cyberskin: a network of electricity across Leo's skin can be activated to protect against weak attacks and projectiles. (+2 dur if at full health, +1 if not) It's physically draining to keep up however, and for extended periods of use Leo's agility will slowly drop.

Protosuit: a form-fitting, carbon nanofiber suit that can use plug'n'play upgrades to enhance one's physical abilities. Additionally, its physical structure can be atomically rearranged through tinkering, and uber-rare upgrades. Leo snatched one from a fallen Institute shipment before reinforcements arrived to reclaim what was left of their cargo. Currently Leo's protosuit has wings for a gentle, controllable descent, as well as a rappel line launcher. This is one sweet piece of equipment.
To be honest, I'm fairly happy with the pyro power, but un-Bioshocking it would be appreciated. Everything is electronic rather than genetic here :p My concern is with the protosuit - equipment that gives you additional abilities is very high end and having it essentially gives you 4/5 abilities for the price of 3. I know that they aren't massively combat related, but I'd rather not set the precedent of power-boosting equipment. That will come later.

Need me to get rid of mine, then? My CS is open for critique, just not done yet.

Kk, will do. But aren't "cybernetic" things basically genetic mods too? o_O
What if I removed the protosuit and replaced it with a sort of power fist? I could install the pyro thing there, and since it's just a hand/wrist attachment, that has less options for power playing early on, without structural and hardware/software modifications.
