that's basically what i was saying above. there are active traits and inactive traits, and within those two there's red dominant and blue recessive. they cross pretty closely to mendel's model. test it out for yourself on some hybrids (hybrid traits, or species, preferably not both), without the bee machines.

as far as being able to use a "punnet square" (i doubt any apiarist actually draws one, it's all in the head), as long as you use it for it's intended purpose you're fine. as in, look at a trait, or the species, but not both at the same time.

What bee combo gives you the greatest chance of getting a pure common princess and drone?

I've been doing bees a long time in many worlds. The following is based upon experience:

Setup:

• Apiary
• 3 Soul Frames

1st pass:

• Pure Meadows + Pure Forest

Set aside pures. Exit successfully if you get a pure Princess and a pure Drone.


2nd pass and Nth passes:

• 2x Meadow/Forest hybrids

-- or --

• 1x Meadow/Common + 1x Forest/Common hybrid

-- or --

• Pure Meadows + Pure Forest

Set aside pures. Exit successfully if you get a pure Princess and a pure Drone.


Any other combo, I recommend breeding back to pure Meadow and pure Forest and trying again. Otherwise, you will get a Cultivated hybrid before you a ready. You can also try a pure Common with either a Common/Meadows or Common/Forestry hybrid in a Bee House to avoid Cultivated and hope to get a pure Princess and pure Drone, but my luck with that is low.

Note the left/right order doesn't matter for the purposes of the next generation, aka "breeding".

Also, if you start bees late enough, use Metabolic Frames rather than Soul Frames for new species attempts. They are far superior in my experience. Use Necrotic Frames to purify or for trait mixing.
