Back in my day, I stocked up on torches because I feared a future update would make them require netherrack or glowstone. (I had heard about plans to turn torches into lanterns or something in Gamma 1.0.0, which would also make the old stick-and-coal torches burn out occasionally and need to be re-lit.)
