Yeah, hence the whole "uninformed masses being easily spoon-fed bullshit that anyone who knows even 1% of the topic won't accept the bullshit" issue. People are stupid, and refuse to learn, and so the leaders tell their herd what to believe and the herd believes it. The public knowledge of Nuclear Power is so ass-backwards that Greenpeace can lie about anything related to nuclear power in any way that doesn't say it's safer then it is, and the masses will gorge themselves on the bullshit.
As another Canadian, you may remember the incident a few years ago where some anti-nuclear advocate gave a speech to Harper himself about how "nuclear plants are just nuclear weapons going off slowly" and how "every man has at least 5% of his gonads made of plutonium from nuclear power". I forget her name (or perhaps am actively suppressing the memory to prevent proximity damage).

I remember mentioning to @Reika the traveling wave reactor (TWR). It could easily be THE power source of the future. There's only one issue, no country wants it to be built there first. Bill Gates has given hundreds of millions to research. There are a bunch of TED talks on it. The fear of another Chernobyl is to strong. The uninformed don't know how much the technology has advanced since then.

Relevant fact: The total death toll from Chernobyl (direct and cancer) is estimated at 4000 people, or about the number of people dying in car accidents every 30 hours, or about the number of fatal heart attacks every five.

I'd also bet that a lot of the public info's been sensationalized, like the rate of birth defects from Chernoble and calling the area around it a dead zone. That same uncle I spoke of was talking about how if you went in to the area of the Chernoble meltdown you end up dead in minutes. But the wildlife in that area are apparently flourishing, heck there's even a village of people who live withing the "dead zone" who are probably ill but still alive, certainly not dead in minutes.

I think it's a better safe then sorry mentality gone awry. Caution's a good thing to practice but too much paralyzes you.

Also fission reactors have came a long way since Chernoble and Fukishima, those reactors where a really old design and Chernoble was a re-purposed cold war era reactor that was primarily designed for the creation of plutonim for bombs, safety was an afterthought. Fukishima was also old by todays standards.

Plus Chernoble went horribly wrong.... just kidding! Horribly RIGHT, I should say! Some scientists decided to run a "off the record" experiment, and opened the roof, and ran it hot with all safeties disabled. And if the roof wasn't wrecked, there wouldn't even BE any fame to the name of the place!

The USSR was not exactly the sanest of designers; I saw one reactor that was unshielded and integrated into an elementary school.

Hmm I don't know, don't you have to "enrich" the ore now before you can make it in to a cell? Not that it matters anyway.

(Edit: Quote fail)
Crush it, boil it, heat it(and maybe there is spinning involved), yeah, "enrich". Just like how one "enriches" metals in IC2 EX to get more ingots.

Whaaat? If this happened in the mid 40's I'd forgive it but this was the 80's they had to know it was a dangerous move...

Radiation is like fire when it comes to use, it is in fact dangerous but only if not used intelligently and diligently. If our "caveman" ancestors where to do with fire what we do with fission/ radiation we wouldn't be typing on this forum, I'm sure some of our paleolithic ancestors rallied against fire in some way, lol. "Fire burn, it bad, no fire!" "No! Fire good, cook meat, taste goood" then steam engines happened ._. (that's how it progressed right?).

And that's why hungry nodes eat you! A cave man liked cooked meat and then steam engines and then other stuff.

Again, the masses are stupid. And this was the first big screw up with nuclear power. I doubt the guys on the job knew what they were doing. I also doubt they did it because they felt like it. I honestly think the level of failure here is too high to be an accident. I'm much more willing to believe the Soviets told them to do this experiment, and did a damn good job saving face and sweeping their involvement under the rug.

I like this topic but it doesn't fit this thread. Would anyone here be against a thread purely for discussion of nuclear energy?

Ever seen the movie "Field of Dreams"? If so, you know what to do. If not, watch the bloody movie then!

Humanity, f*** yeah. Or not.
Huh.

In soviet Russia, nuclear reactor runs off of school children and makes plutonium!
Memes integrate well with Nuclear Science.

Will the thread melt down and kill us all in a totally not scaremongery way?

I think we should cover the entire thread with solar panels and its coastal spaces with windfarms. XD

Here's some anti-nuclear propaganda from everyone's favourite windowlickers:
