Is there a way to automate wither farming in Direwolf20 1.10?
I'm using the shield projector tier 4 at the moment but placing things manually is so slow

I have looked, but the mod name is actually a Boolean character... Sky Factory 3, there is a Pipe mod " | "... where is the info for this mod? I'm curious. Links to hoppers... but doesn't seem to do anything. Look like buildcraft pipes

The typical way atm is to make a tall building and spawn the wither on top, let it fall and kill it with a DE grinder

What's a "DE" grinder?
How do you place the skulls and sand, how do you protect the thing that places them from the blast while lettting it place object inside the shielded area?
what material do you use for the building?

What's a "DE" grinder? Draconic Evolution Mob Grinder. It's a wee expensive, but considering you're making a wither farm you should have the infrastructure ready
How do you place the skulls and sand
For the sand any block placer should do fine. One example bring Extra Utilities' Mechanical User. For the skulls I recommend just the vanilla dispenser. They seem to be more reliable than any other modded block placer. Make sure to place the sand before the skulls

You don't. If you let the wither fall long enough, the blocks should be out of the explosion radius. If you're kinda scared / don't have much height to work with an Actually Additions block protector (name?) can protect blocks at the cost of RF

Any witherproof block should work fine. One example is EnderIO's reinforced obsidian. Again, a bit pricey but then again you're building a wither farm
Answers in bold above

ok sounds good, now I gotta figure out how to time the placing of the sand before the skulls, I'm sure there some vanilla or ae thingy
Redstone signal to activate skull and sand placement, a vanilla repeater will delay a redstone signal. Although that will break if you ever run out of sand.

Repeater is what I do too. Just for clarity: the repeater goes after the sand placement, before the skull placement, and you may need to adjust the delay slightly (I forget if that was necessary)

Having a timer and ExUtil hyper-rationing pipes with a comparator feedback loop can do it automatically.

you can use a level emitter detecting the sand in the system to block placing the skulls until there is enough

Any suggestions for something easier/cheaper to make than a quarry to keep chunks loaded? I'm assuming I need to do that to make the perpetual nether lava pump running, but if I can spare myself the costs of building another quarry, it'd be cool.

Which modpack? Answer varies.

Alternatively, poke around in NEI and see if you see anything with the word "chunk" or "loader" in it.

Completely custom modpack, so I'm mainly asking what mod I should install if there's a better option. If it's anything that affects world generation, like adds more ores or whatever, then I'll stick with the quarry.

Edit: looking through wiki's for "loader" tells me I might jsut be better off making the quarry. It's all already there. Hell, I think I have everything but the pickaxe already there.

Popular solution used by this community:
http://mod-minecraft.net/chickenchunks-mod/

It is very specifically a dedicated chunkloading mod. It lets you specify the area and shape of the area kept loaded. I personally use it.

edit: Also, its a better use of your memory/cpu resources than a quarry.

Hm.. that might be the guy! I had browsed past this previously because I saw the external app and thought it was more complicated than it's worth. But, seeing the link you sent, it actually looks like it might be perfect! Thanks!

glad to help. Just make sure you get its dependency too: http://mod-minecraft.net/codechickencore-mod/

It should be as simple as dropping both files into the mods folder and starting the pack up.

edit: ignore instructions about the coremods folder. That's a lie afaik.
