Are arcane lamps bad for lag? I was playing this morning and my computer blue screened. I needed to leave anyways so when the computer restarted i just hit shutdown and left. Now i fire the server up tonight and notice the server window is acting all funny. Like it did when my 3 year old hit the power button on the computer. I had a corrupted chunk. So i opened up MCedit to delete the chunk and noticed a ton of yellow boxes around my base. I clicked on them and it had something to do with arcane lamps. Now i noticed a particle effect like a firefly or something when in game. But there was alot of these yellow boxes in MCedit. Is this ok?

Let me explain what Arcane Lamps do. They themselves act as a single light source, however when placed they also place down multiple invisible light sources around it in about a 10-20 block radius around it. These little light sources are what give off those firefly particle effects, otherwise they're quite invisible and take up a block space until you put something in it's place.

Particle effects can attribute somewhat to your lag, especially if there's a lot of them and if you have multiple lamps definitely so, however if you reduce the particle setting in the options you should be fine.

Server lag? No. Not once they've spawned everything, they shouldn't be anymore intensive than torches.

Although come to think of it, I -think- they constantly check to see if they can place more glimmers... But I could be wrong and if I'm not it shouldn't be that intensive.

I don't know which is worse between FZ's wrath lamps or TC's arcane lamps; I've heard that both cause a bit of lag, although I think wrath lamps are worse in that respect.

Arcane lamps are a bit annoying, though, as the "glimmers of light" tend to just obstruct blocks behind themselves sometimes...
BTW, I believe the yellow boxes you're seeing in MCEdit are Tile Entities; in this case, the actual light sources placed by the lamp. This is normal.

Arcane Lamps actually place that "Glimmer of light" within their radius where things are dark enough for mobs to spawn. The can be broken with a single punch. Compare that to FZ wrath lamps which are known to have(in the past if not the present) use a sort of "Light Air", a block with the exact properties of air except it has light level 15. And it's also not the same block as air, so things that know whether or not they can grow through things don't take too kindly to "Light Air".

At one point, the Forgecraft server had trouble with arcane lamps vanishing, which was apparently because the lamps were throwing exceptions that would've crashed the server, had Forge not responded by deleting the lamps instead.

I'm not sure if the bug that caused this has been fixed, but it probably has. If so, the lamps probably don't cause any more problems than anything else. They don't seem to scan around for darkness very often, either- they're very slow to illuminate anything beyond the normal range of a torch.

ForgeCraft was just using a Forge config option to keep the server running smoother. Normal response to a errorring TE is to either shut down and give a explanation, or just delete it and print into the console what got deleted and where.

And you're right on the lack of speed on them. But when they do check for darkness, they seem to do it in a decent radius. From a torch of light to a few rooms fully lit. Just keep in mind that you'll want to keep those WELL AWAY from a mob farm, and doubly so if it uses cursed earth.

Wraith lamps, (1.4.7, dunno if later versions) "light blocks" also blocked things from growing.

What about the AM2 sigil of light? (It works in a similar way -- spamming torch-like objects in a radius)

I haven't noticed them interfering with crops in the village I'm using them to keep lit.

I once had a single player world where after a while I had more then 700 glimmer of lights from only a few arcane lamps (I believe 3). That's when I decided that I no longer want to use that lamp :)

I remove the arcane lamps and then got rid of the glimmer of lights (which didn't go away on their own unfortunatelly) by disabling it in the config and then re-enabling it later.

700 glimers of light from 3 arcane lamps isn't that bad. Again, I'm not sure what your issue even is.

I kinda love-hate the lamps - They're a convenient option to light up a big room, but the glimmers can be annoying and it's impossible to set up a dark room near such a lamp. I have to keep them away from the oreberry farm.

Oh and don't use gaseous tenebrae in range of one - it tries to lighten it up by spamming glimmers inside the area.

Too bad that lights cannot be brighter than 15.

I miss wrath lamps. I also wish they were more like other lamps that would change appearance based on what surface they were mounted to... Ceiling, floor, wall, etc.

Well the glimmers of light came up extremely high in the opis ranking (rendering or server, forgot what exactly).

Guessing Rendering, because that's 700 light sources, but not 700 lighting updates every time they check if they are able to add more glimmers.
