I have a barrel with the structural vii upgrade applied, allowing for 127 upgrades. There is however an upgrade that has x243 ... Unless I am missing something, why have an upgrade in game that can't possibly be applied to anything? And if I am missing something that allows the x243 to be applied, can someone point it out to me?

Isn't that the creative barrel upgrade?? As in you can pull infinite items out of a barrel... 255 - a few other variables = 243 would be the limit for a short code so I think it's just displaying something deep in the code that only unlocks in creative
No, it's got a crafting recipe: 3x81 storage upgrades. Which are made from 3x27 storage upgrades made from 3x9 storage upgrades made from 3x3 storage upgrades made from 3x basic storage upgrades.
243 is just 3^5, in this case.
That isn't what I was asking. I think it's best you read what I was asking before answering next time. But here it is again ....
So, as you can see here The structural 7 allows for 127 upgrades, there isn't a higher structural upgrade that allows for the 243 .... I never asked how to make it. Just how to apply it.

did you try adding the other structural upgrades? just add the 1,3,7,15,31 and 63 one (whatever they are) as well
They are requirements to get to level 7. You have to add the structural upgrades sequentially, and I don't think you can add more than one of each type.
Nope, that don't work. However if you edit the config file to allow for a 8th tier upgrade, it adds it to NEI with the material portal, but that's it. Doesn't show how to make that. You can add the 8th material, which I did via Iridium, and can add a total of 255 upgrades in game. Iridium seemed like too steep of a material to use, but any other I could have thought of was being used.
Also if I understand this correctly, you can add infinite tiers of upgrades it would seem, but would need a different material for each one.[DOUBLEPOST=1404502740][/DOUBLEPOST]
See above. That's all I could find out. Not sure if you guys have any other input regarding what I posted.
