The stained clay is what I want more than anything. Its the first block in vanilla or mods that actually allows for modern builds without using a texture pack. I'm very excited about them. Finding a canyonland BoP biome makes clay collection a breeze.

There are plenty of colored blocks in modded minecraft.
I use Misa's so only vanilla blocks are changed for me.
I don't find any of the blocks ugly.

It's really a personal opinion as to what you like and don't like.
I will never play vanilla again so I will always have options from mods.

It's definitely an opinion. I feel texture packs are crutches for builders. Mainly because what looks good in one looks horrible in default or other packs.

Sure mods offer various blocks, but there are very few that aren't just over the top. Vanilla does some things the mods don't, simplicity. Clay blocks are are simple, muted, and have connected textures. It's what every player and World of Keralis has been trying to create using wool and texture packs. And that's a great thing for me and for others who like to build.

I'm slowly working on Misa compatible textures for the mods. I have a topic for it in the texture forum. Might be of interest to you.
