I get random lag spikes, and I have no idea why. Obviously the metric ton mods I've installed doesn't help the case, but I can't really figure out the cause of the lag spikes. I've allocated 3GBs of RAM to Minecraft out of my 4, and when check the F3 menu it doesn't seem like the problem is the RAM but what else could it be? I'd imagine if the CPU was the problem it wouldn't be lag spikes, just generally lower fps. I also have fastcraft and optifine installed.

Running anything else in the background?
Nothing that would take up more than almost zero resources. I usually have Firefox open to check wikis and stuff, and VLC for music, but this time I closed those too. Even fraps wasn't running because it decided it didn't want to start on startup and I didn"t notice it back then.

My guess its garbage collection, but it would help if we know the mods you use and of course hardware.
Another thing to note is that its not good to starve windows with RAM and as it needs about 2 GB's or RAM I fear that if you allocate 3 of the 4 you have to minecraft you are doing this, open task manager and check the amount of used RAM to know for sure you are doing it or not.

@sgbros1 I was already working on a post here and I am sad to inform you that I am not the greatest with hardware

edit and I take too long with writing these things it seems:
@Unit88 look under snooper settings for open gl vendor, if it says intel it is also using the wrong Graphics card this is probably not related but you never know

I had a feeling maybe windows wanted some more of the RAM too :D I hope it's just that, because I was planning on buying more anyway. Also what do you mean by garbage collection?

I have tons of mods so I'll say the ones that come to my mind right now and edit in the rest gradually.

DivineRPG
Advent Of Ascension
IC2
Forestry
Thermal Expansion
Thaumcraft
Blood Magic
ComputerCraft
Modular Powersuits
Buildcraft
EnderIO
Ender Storage
Applied Energistics 2
Mystcraft
Minefactory Reloaded
Project Red
Tinker's Construct
Steve's Carts
Twilight Forest

Also, I have a lot of addons for the bigger mods too like Thaumcraft or Forestry

to explain garbage collection: every so often java looks for data that is not used anymore to free up some RAM, this can cause lag spikes as it need CPU resources to look for it, you can not turn it off as that would mean you get an out of memory error way to often as unused memory will not be freed. To easily get a modlist make a screen shot of your mods folder like this:

Oh, yeah, screenshots. That's also a way of doing it :D

I just recently noticed that MacOSX & all the things running in the background were using around 1.3 G out of the 2 G ram in my MacBook. Now I have 4 G ram & my lag spikes are gone. I can even use JourneyMap! My fps is still 15 & under, I suspect improving that would take a better cpu.

Drop your allocation to 2, maybe 2.5GB. Windows needs 1.5-2GB to itself run smoothly, depending on the version. If you can, bump your installed ram to 8GB at the least. This will allow both Windows to have 4GB, and also MC/Java.

This will leave Windows with about 2GB free for other programs, although as rule I never run more than one at a time. Windows strong points never included efficient multitasking. :D

Yeah, I guess getting more RAM is gonna be my next task. Until then I'll try allocating 2.5GBs to Minecraft, hopefully that'll be enough because the only reason I bumped it up to 3GB is because 2 wasn't enough. I could see on the F3 screen that RAM usage would go up to the max, lag spike, then back down a couple hundred.

As above, my old machine that I literally just replaced last week had 4GBs of RAM, i'd allocate 2GB to MC and even then i'd struggle with big packs. Without Fastcraft and java arguments I doubt it would have been playable at all.
