Eh, I think the focus of Spice and Wolf is about the interactions of the characters rather than the setting. But that just might be my take on it.

i think when it come to judging how generic series is, it's not about the setting, but how characters react to the situations they are in.
and from my experience the most rational reactions seem to be the least generic, which is quite sad to be honest...

Should you ever change your mind, and you just want to know the end, you can use some hours and read just the epilogue (chapter 17).
Of course you won't understand some of the characters, but that doesn't matter.
