Now that I have your attention...

Anyone else experimented with the Voxel mods included with the Ultimate pack to see if modifying/removing them has any kind of impact on performance? After about two weeks and hours of googling and experimenting I finally solved all of my Optifine issues by disabling the Voxel mods and installing Rei's Minimap. Rei's hurt performance as well, particularly when loading into the world, but it didn't come with the same overhead, so to speak, that the Voxel kit did. And also, knowing that the ridiculous nyan cat will never again make an appearance on my screen was a welcome bonus.

It's useless bloatware in a sorry attempt to make the pack look more 'professional' imo.

If that was the case, killing the nyan cat crap might have been a good step ;D

on my laptop
with voxel: 10fps average
with rei: 20-30fps average
without either 25-35 average

That sounds similar to my results by scale if not by explicit fps.

I like the look of voxel and the fact that it automatically changes to cave level and whatnot. However, it does make my keys stick if I zoom while holding wasd and I drown in lava. really annoying major bug should be fixed/left out of modpack, for reals.

Problems with Voxel:
1. Decreases performance.
2. Shows mob locations and caves (could be considered cheating on servers)
3. Makes trying to hide pointless

I have a server for a few friends, and some of them just leave the pack as it is, which would be fine, except I don't like that they can see mobs, caves, spawners and players with no restriction.
So, just brings back Rei's Minimap, and dump the Voxel mods!

Someone should make a poll thread; What's your favourite?
-Rei's
-Voxel
-Neither
-Other
-I just roll with whatever the modpack comes with

My waypoints actually all vanished with the voxel pack for no apparent reason. I just logged in one day and it told me that the world no longer had any recorded waypoints.

It's only a minor nuisance, but a nuisance none the less.

I've had this happen.

It made me quit the world as i tend to spread out over a good few thousand blocks.

I can understand that being considerably more annoying.

I just marked a few villages and the end portal. It wasn't a big loss at all for me as the villages were all within 2k blocks and the end portal is stupid easy to find.

I build specific things in specific kinda places. My home is usually in Extreme Hills, While Thaumcraft is done in autumn forest, most of my power gen is done in the desert or wasteland, and usually farm in some nearby open grassy or tree filled place.... >.> Not to picky on the farm, as i hardly ever really make one.. Few patches here and there where i make bread... >.>; or in 1.5.X i use Natura and eat berries all the days. ;.; love those bushes.

Anyways, on topic, Rei's used to have a way of showing mobs. Though it turned off automatically on servers.

And with Voxel, i usually keep mine off unless i'm mining in uncharted territory. Then again, that's probably considered one of the problems. And i can see how it'd be a pain on PvP servers for ambushers and such. Maybe a server side toggle that default to on, and can be changed in game by a... mod? OP? Admin? I dunno what those are called in minecraft.

Ok, I understand why people don't like most voxel stuff, most of it isn't that useful. But I really don't get why people say all over the place REI's minimap is superior. (Hint: in my experience, it's not)
I'll play advocate of the devil here, but this is my experience with both minimap mods. So recently I changed modpack from ultimate to direwolf20. And I get really annoyed by the fact REI is actually installed in dw, here's why:
- Voxels waypoint markers (the big beams) are way nicer, much more visible.
- Voxels waypoints carry over to the nether, which is actually pretty useful.
- REI's doesn't keep my waypoints in mystcraft dimensions.
- REI's UI is downward ugly. At least the voxel minimap UI follows the regular minecraft UI.
- I actually think the cave map ability is really useful, but I don't play on a competitive server.
- FPS might be an issue, but I play on low FPS all the time, be it ultimate or DW. So I can't say I noticed a big difference. I haven't had the time to try and replace REI's with zans in the DW pack, something I'll eventually do. Only then I'll be able to see if there's such a big difference.

Ok, so if you can find me a solution for the first 4 points I might reconsider REI's. If not, it's going to get kicked out of my pack someday.

Voxel's waypoints aren't even visible past 1k blocks.

There are only a handful of reasons to need waypoints within 1k blocks of wherever you are.

The mystcraft waypoint issue is a valid concern, though.

The beams aren't indeed, which strikes me as logical. The waypoints however are also marked with a point (much like REI's) and these remain visible afaik. It's the best of both worlds. ;)

The waypoints remain visible up until 1k blocks away from the marker. Then they disappear.

Rei's waypoints show up from thousands and thousands of blocks away.

Ah, I see. You're right, this could be a downside.
It was the arrow on the minimap that I remembered, not the waypoint itself.

Maybe if those waypoints were /8, but they're not. youhave a WP at 8000, 8000, there will be a WP at 8000/8000 in the nether. Completely useless

Playing with low FPS makes you realise how shit Voxel is all the more, as any change in FPS is keenly felt.

Also, 2 of your points that you want solutions for are entirely personal, I actually find Rei's waypoints to be very nice, I don't particularly like having some huge beam of light in the middle of my base. And as for the Menu, I barely spend any time in it anyway, but at the start of a new modpack it takes me 1 minute to sort out all the options and settings that I want (round, Zans, type 1 coords, no menu key, change some keyconfigs) and then I never have to go into it again.
