First of all, I've been out of the FTB game for a bit and now that I have more free time, I'm interested in playing with it again. However, the main problem i'm having includes picking out a mod pack.

Originally, I loved ultimate. Had a bit of everything I loved and synergized well.
Problem is, its not updated anymore.

So I was perhaps considering picking up a new pack, though I have -no- idea what the differences are and I've found very little explaining the differences.

I heard Unleashed is the successor to Ultimate and Monster is the successor to unleashed, but i've also heard alot of conflicting opinions in that reguard and they all seem pretty different from ultimate.

So in short I suppose the real question is...whats the real differences between each pack, how can I find which one is the right one for me, is it possible to make my own custom mod pack without much hassle, and if anyone can give me some useful insight to the whole thing?

I've only played one or two mod packs, so I can't give you an answer, but I will ask you what type of mods do you like playing? Do you have a preference over the magic types compared to the industry types? That may allow others to give you a better answer.

My favorite mods are the mechanical ones. Industrialcraft, modular armor, gregtech, Applied Energistics, Redpower just to name a few

Though I do love a few others such as thaumcraft, Xeno's Reliquary, Mystcraft, Equivalent Exchange, EnderStorage.

Pretty much loved everything about ultimate, though those listed above are some of my favorites.

GregTech is not in 1.6.4 packs. There are replacement mods for RedPower but they are not full replacements and not in 1.5. EE3 is in 1.6.4 but is in alpha, and not in any modpacks. IC2 got extremely tedious, even without GT, in 164. However, 164 has a good deal of more mods and I advise you to jump into Monster to see some of those. You seem like you would love RotaryCraft.

GregTech is in 1.6.4, you can access it in private packs and the thread on the ic2 forums offers it. Like I said, MegaSharkPunch for TPPI. Basically ultimate for 1.6.4 give or take a few mods. GTech is configured to be like 1.4

I meant 164 packs, will update.

Checked out tppi so far, looks good but I was wondering if there was any way to compare the mod pack easily? Also, whats missing from TPPI that ultimate had? I feel like it may be missing a few mods or something.

Things that were not updated, like XyCraft and RedPower2 (though I think it has project:red)

Hmm, just figured that out after looking through the wiki. I'll miss them but i'll get over it, sadly. Though I am curious if there is a detailed list of the mods in TPPI so I can compare to see if it has all of my favorite mods?

the TPPI subreddit MIGHT have that
There ismalso an in-game mods button
It is just ever mod in Ultimate

checked the sub and a list was there! Missing a few things that were in ultimate, though.

Equivalent Exchange, OmniTools, Soul Shards, Wireless Redstone
I'm not sure if any of the new mods replace the ones listed above. As it stands, no biggy but I did like those mods a bit.

EE is currently in (I think) a beta release. OmniTools is no longer being maintained. Soul Shards 2 has completely changed and is nothing like the first one. Wireless Redstone is the same, probably safe to add.

Hmm, after going over a few of the packs, unleashed looks the best and most simular to ultimate, of course its an outdated pack and outdated minecraft...I'm assuming i'm better off using one of the 1.6.4 packs, then?

I mean, I could deal with not having some of the older mods but the one I care most about is IndustrialCraft and the new one in monster and TPPI seems...lacking? for lack of a better word.

When you boot up TPPI you will wonder why you said that
Seriosuly

It's OK. Adds a lot more needless busywork and faff for no extra reward, makes some things more expensive but at least machines no longer explode if you put too much power into them. These days I only use it for overclocked furnaces in autocrafting systems, for everything else I use the less irritating analogues in other mods.
