Hi guys, I started playing FTB for about a few weeks ago and the thing that was popular was pack A and yes it was cool. But then just last week I heard that they were going to update to 1.4.6 which got me really excited. So I waited and today, while watching Slowpoke's stream they released a pack.. yes, but not the pack I was thinking of and most other servers weren't thinking of either. I thought that the server pack A was getting an upgrade and not another pack added in. I'm terribly confused and I want somebody to clarify this to me.
Thanks!
Sincerely, Hoaz

How did that not help you? "Feed The Beast BETA Pack A" is a beta pack meaning it is not finished and was for testing only. Never get attached to things in Beta because final product can and do often vary. There will be many packs released, The "Ultimate" Pack, the "Magic World" Pack, the "Tech" Pack, the "Direwolf 20" Pack, the Mindcrack Pack, and not to mention 3rd party packs like Universal Electricity and Voxel Packs.

These are all different packs with differing mods and configs, all the info is dispersed here and around the website.

The pack that was released (the mindcrack pack) was always going to be released. The reason it was released now as opposed to later is that it doesn't include some of the mods that are still holding up the main pack (Mystcraft, etc). It wasn't waiting on anything, so it could be released. The main pack still needs a couple of Mods to be finished.

There will be official packs, most of what I listed are official packs. The Beta Pack for for testing purposes, configs, mods that are OP or people don't like or are gamebreakers. So as I said, don't get attached to ANYTHING that says Beta because chances are the final product will be vastly different than the beta. And the OFFICIAL FTB Pack will be for the OFFICIAL FTB Map, that is the whole reason for the launcher and everything you see.

The Launcher was made to be a easy place to have the FTB challenge Maps and all mods needed in one convienent place. Than they said WTH lets add other mod packs (with permissions) so everyone can enjoy modded minecraft.

yeah but I heard that there's going to be an official pack.

All of the wonderful packs that will be offered are official packs. You not only get to choose which one (or ones) float your boat, but adding/subtracting mods from them is easy. Hard to ask for much more, honestly.

As a rule of thumb never ever get attached to anything mod related no matter what as the chances are always very high of losing everything with each and every main minecraft update. Due to the modders adding new things or changing current things which can and will break your world as it happens often. As for the beta pack A it is not going to be updated it appears and is replaced with all the new official packs.

There is no "Main" Pack as of right now guys. Seriously.....I am not kidding, no "Main" pack exists. Beta Pack A will most likely NOT be updated.

It's like this, there will be 4 new packs (MindCrack, Direwolf20, Ultimate and Lite), we already have the MindCrack pack done. Slowpoke said DW20's pack will follow next (subject to change) with Ultimate and Lite being last.

The beta A pack which is currently on MC 1.4.2 will maybe cease to exist, they may keep it on there for a while longer as it can co-exist with all these newer packs. So no Beta-A will not be updated it will be replaced by these 4 other packs.

The well known FTB [Beta] Pack A was (as far as I understood it) a response to "Oh-no we have a launcher but no pack to test... here is a pack while we wait for redpower. Now that we have all the mods - including redpower - together, the original plan goes ahead:

It's like this, there will be 4 new packs (MindCrack, Direwolf20, Ultimate and Lite), we already have the MindCrack pack done. Slowpoke said DW20's pack will follow next (subject to change) with Ultimate and Lite being last.
DW20's pack is out.

When everything is 'finished' (i.e. what is being aimed towards), quite a number of modpacks will be available
  • Map pack(s): The pack(s) that will be for the final maps and specially configured for the final maps. Like the MC 1.2.5 pack has the current FTB maps - Waiting on EE to get to an acceptable stage
  • Themed packs: Magic pack, Tech/Technical pack, Ultimate pack, Lite pack - Packs targeted around a theme (i.e. magic, technology, everything, barely anything)
  • Celeb packs: Packs made for minecraft celebrities (I am not sure of the exact requirements for this category). E.g. Direwolf20, Mindcrack
  • Other modpacks: Packs from the community. The Universal Electricity pack that is already in the launcher.
Note: This is what I have picked up, so it is not official info and might be wrong.

No the ultimate pack you're correct about. And it's estimated release soon, I mean. We're waiting for one last MODDER and he's away 'til today so he should be working on it, if not already, in a few hours or so.
So yeah, I can't wait for Ultimate pack!

Ok, I just found this thread, and was wondering whether the beta pack would be updated? (I doubt it) If not, is there some way I can import my world I have been working on in SSP into any of the other modpacks? Also, which one would you suggest?

Slowpoke said they hope to be able to make some scripts to TRY and convert worlds over but there is absolutely no guarantee.
