just in case someone is interested i now got a 2560x1440 monitor and minecraft is running great in full screen.

Minecraft runs fine at the resolution. starts saving for a better CPU :p

i guess my i5 cpu will not need to be upgrade ( it is slightly overclocked at 4.20 GHz )

im looking at getting a ASUS PB278Q 27in monitor but i dont know what this will do to minecraft. im guessing it will be fine but there is no resolution settings (that i can fined) in the options. any help would be great.

Just a little input from myself as having a quick read I find some of the posts misleading.
It's not so much the Monitor as it is the Graphics Card you have driving the monitor. You could have a i7 Extreme running a 5.0ghz processor (is there one yet?) and it's not going to look much better than a 17inch monitor.
Monitors and Graphics Cards work in Harmony with each other. A monitor can accept upto a certain resolution and a graphics card can output a certain resolution.
No point in having a Monitor thats way more capable than what your Graphics Card can send to it.
For instance I have a Philips 52" LCD TV which I plug a HDMI cable into and alter the resolution quite high as I have a card that is capable of doing so. But the TV prefers a lower resolution. Looks as clear on the TV as it does on the 20" monitor I have.
3ms monitor better than a 5ms monitor.

Do some more research before you go spending heaps on a huge monitor, just incase your graphics card can't keep up.
In saying that if you just want a bigger screen to look at, then why not!

What kind of card would not support any common screen resolution?
The cheapest card I could find can still do 2560x1600 which is probably the most you will do with a single screen.

I'm running 3428x1920 without any problem on a i7 @ 3.5Ghz and a ATI 5870.

Yes i5 should make the CPU not be a bottleneck in FTB high intensity areas.

the cpu will always be the bottle neck because of the way minecraft works. it only uses 1 core!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (unless your using a very shitty graphics card). people c a low fps and think is because of the graphics card but they never check the cpu.

i5 and i7 are almost the same, the difference is the i7 has hyper threading. does minecraft even use hyper threading?
