C'mon, flight, repairing tools, walking on water, shields... all they really need now is larger storage, better furnaces, and some way to automate mining/wood cutting/farming

You don't watch enough vanilla players if you think vanilla players can't do all that already.
Someone made a tunnel bore using withers, automated wood farm that also harvests the wood (you still need to plant saplings though) and I am pretty sure that you at least used to be able to use the new villager behavior to get some farms like wheat automated (I believe you could even get the creation of bread automated at one point due to villagers being "nice").
Then there is also the fact that gold, iron, redstone and glowstone are farmable in vanilla minecraft leaving diamonds the only ore worth mining for and that can easily be solved by breeding the "perfect" villagers. Though, as villager trading has changed I am not sure how good that system is currently.
381 make an enderdragon xp farm, modded minecraft style in the hopes that it works better then the vanilla minecraft one. (Which I doubt if you compare it to the 1.9 way as I believe that the amount that die each cycle increases until there die 10 each cycle without it costing anything (maybe some tnt to damage the dragon, though I never heard that guy who made it in survival talk about refilling the dispenser so who knows what for chunk unloading magic he used for that))
I have seen the sort of stuff vanilla players have done... However, how many are actually viable. Wither farm tree farms are cool. But also impossible to do if you are playing pure survival, and not to mention it's quite late game seeing as the wither is general done after the ender dragon. As for the mining...? How? I don't know about this :| And the villagers are a very meh form of farm automation, and I don't think they can place saplings.

Yet it has been done, I believe someone also did it with ghasts but not so sure about that.
Not sure if it is still possible. It involved putting a whither in a minecart though (which needed some trickery). An older method used silverfish and a transport tunnel in the nether. Let them infect an area for a while and poison a few. Result-> a good amount of stone what got infected is now gone (depending on the amount of them that you brought to the area)
I also know it used to be able to automatically create and harvest obsidian but I am not sure if that still works due to changes in the obsidian platform you stand on.
384 make an anvil duplicator using the vanilla way with some mods to make the process even more awesome and faster. (Maybe even make it so that each time it duplicates one it uses the new one for EVEN MORE SPEED! assuming it won't lagg your computer out it will probably become the fastest way to make anvils out of nothing)
Just the same as the good old sand duplicators, this time however it involves the end portal. I am pretty sure it can duplicate anvils, though they might get damaged in the process.....
I usually kill a wither before the dragon since beacon insta-mining is more important that ender pearls in vanilla.
There is an ender dragon egg duplicator in 1.9 that uses the end portal
I know, it uses the same mechanic as the sand duplicator that exists since 1.8.

Do you have CoFH Core installed? I think that needs to be there for RF to transfer properly. This was the case a while back, not sure if still the case.
