So mojang released a 1.5.2 prerelease today http://mojang.com/ I hope this doesnt affect mods too badly (I assume it won't) but this might mean we have to wait a few more weeks.

The vast majority of 1.5.1 mods will work in 1.5.2.

Really, unless the mod tests for the exact version, it will just work. And if it does, it shouldn't.

So Forge won't work. Though they'll probably just need to change a line or two.

(I tried installing Forge for 1.4.7 onto 1.4.6 for Railcraft. Didn't work. Switched to a 1.4.7 jar. Worked.)

well there might be some modders that might be busy or something and might not be able to update for a while

What this means in plain English is that mods are no longer dependent on a specific version of Minecraft if they implement this feature - only Forge has to update.

OH
GOD
YES[DOUBLEPOST=1366924716][/DOUBLEPOST]
all bugfixes

Hmm. Probably means no compatibility, the 1.4.2 -> 1.4.5 and 1.4.5 -> 1.4.6 (and, I think, all the 1.2.x updates other than 1.2.2 -> 1.2.3) were bugfixes and broke mods.

tl;dr:

If mods implemented runtime deobfuscation, they won't need to update. If they didn't, they will have to update.

well even with out core mods it helps us modded players to enjoy all the new bennifits without the wait because the core mods seem to be able to get on the ball since they don't have all the issues with playable mods. that is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI it's possible for Mojang to change the internals in such a way that mods have to be rebuilt even with runtime deobfuscation, such as changing an interface definition. This happened in 1.5.0->1.5.1. I have no idea if that happened here yet, though, but I'm hoping not.
