Recently I have started a 1.5.2 direwolf beta pack and I was wondering the best ways to your basic auto farms. I like the way MFR looks but I'm not sure. Is steves cart farms still a good idea? Forestry? (And yes, this will later be used as a power supply as my base so I need saplings too)

for sheer output and customizability, nothing will beat an MFR farm. Really any of the options will give you more than what you need, but MFR wins because of how easy it is to dictate what the farm grows.

The thing with MFR farms is if you give them the range upgrades they can act really derpy as they look at only one block every their idling time finishes which can lead to grown trees just standing there for sometime before they get chopped down. But since you asked about how to start auto farms, the massive derp creating upgrades are probably not what you will be using so MFR is the way into go. MFR is always the best way to start autofarms but if you get into bees and trees later you will have to build a multifarm or a wood cutter cart with the exotic trees addon as MFR can't harvest forestry trees. And if you have trouble finding apatite for the multifarm you can craft MFR's fertiliser into Forestry fertiliser....

Wow, that's a lot of words. I hope that helps you with your autofarming.

SC's farms were nerfed, but not as horribly as I thought. You get less saplings (and maybe wood too, not sure) from their basic versions and they won't last forever, but they'll still last a long time. If you're running Dartcraft 0.1.17 (all 1.5.2 packs that have that mod use that version of it, currently) they're the only way to auto-farm Force trees as well.
Forestry is still Forestry. I guess it depends on how much you use biomass and/or breed trees.
MFR is still kind, though, especially if you have a decent fertilizer income from your animals. Just make a normal farm without upgrades, only let it plant one sapling at a time, give it all the fertilizer you can and that's pretty much infinite wood.

That's not a derp. The farms are supposed to run slower. The downside to bigger farms is a longer period of waiting, even after the idle time is finished.

I know that, I was just explaining that it doesn't immediately chop the trees down with larger upgrades. He might be used to multifarms where it chops it down near immediately after it has grown or a Steve's carts farm where you can see where the cart is on the track and how close or far away from the tree it is. Besides they do look derpy, well at least they do to me....
