Ftb servers are recommended to have 3-4gb of ram. As for his personal Computer, I never go above 3.5gb ram usage. So an upgrade to 8gb should be sufficient.

yep, that's the spawn point protection I think by default its 16 by 16 blocks you can change it to one by one in the server properties file can't remember what its called. I had the same issue when I first started up my server.
