As opposed to what? in case you didn't notice, the mod is still a work in progress. It's useable, it does what it's supposed to do, and that's more than many mods that are still in-progress with V<1.0. And BTW if you have to make your world 5GB to find enough villages, you're doing something...

greatwood logs are from Thaumcraft 3, they can be crafted into arcane wood blocks with 4 of them in a square (in the arcane workbench, which requires you to have a wand to use). arcane wood blocks are used for a number of things, including wooden golems and warded jars.

As long as you make a world with all the necessary (valid) parameters, you shouldn't have to worry about instability.

the only thing I would be concerned about is, personal linking books (especially following books) could lead to someone leaving the creative world without losing creativemode.

What would be interesting IMO would be to add another type of instability...much like the "grey goo" mod seen at the end of DW's S3 LP (I think it was season 3 anyways) which would begin underground and consume the world from below, never giving any hint to its existence until it was discovered...

I wouldn't call them "horribly laggy" I have made an entire house out of Basalt and marble coverstrips, and no noticeable FPS drop to show for it (this is running on intel HD 4000 Integrated graphics on a laptop, if that's going to keep up then any computer with remotely reasonable hardware will)

well, I wouldn't really say that the netherThermal setup is actually "easy" to set up. there's many systems that are easier to make (solar plants come to mind, as do treefarms+generators) but it's a possibility.

can you post a screenshot (or two or three, however many you need) showing your setup? It's hard to diagnose a problem with tubes without seeing how everything is set up.
