That lava tank, is it a railcraft one or a xythingy mod one?

I've heard that pumping lava can be laggy and there was a post where someone had an issue with chunk loaders not working, something to do with lava source blocks outside the chunk loader area. I think your best bet maybe to have a little turtle mine netherack and place it into a magma crucible.

I signed up just to answer this question. I spent a day or so trying to get the sounds to work on mo creatures, and I finally figured it out. The integrated sounds mod stops the mo creatures sounds from working, all you have to do is disable the the integrated sounds mod and you can hear those...
