i actually prefer bio gas engines... same power output like combustion, never explode or overheat, need only one bucket of lava and a pipe providing biomass to run forever. biomass is easily gathered with an automated sugar cane farm. they can also use other fuel, like seed oil or honey.

sounds very much like you have the multithreading option enabled. just don't use it. and if you must, you have to disable threading optimization in your graphics card drivers. i still ended up with kinda corrupted mobs and stuff, so i just don't use it. optifine still helps with the performance.

if you go for a boiler you could power a steam turbine with it. i think it produces EU. the boiler could be heated with biofuel or something. so no direct MJ to EU conversion, but at least it would be nothing but MJ-powered mods before the steam turbine.

for lux simple torches work fine as well. for motus you can also use doors, better trap doors. boats look like the cheapest/best thing to make though. for instrumentum you can use any tools. for tutamen it's cheapest to use leather without crafting it into armor. and making glass into glass...

i think meldirons self fueling boiler was nerfed already. i'm playing the magic pack here and when i hover over a bucket of lava it says it generates 20k heat BUT only 1k heat in railcraft. and that's where boilers come from. EDIT: oh i just realized you guys were aware of it alreday...
