Top is for inserting items, bottom for extraction if i'm not mistaken. I would recommend JABBA barrels as they allow insertion or extraction from any side.

I might have to agree with you, but i still think it adds a bit more of a challenge, either find hives, or breed some bees. Since you can't really automate tree breeding yet i think it's a good honey sink for the bee keeper. But if we could automate tree breeding, i think something like fruit...

You can get combs from using a scoop on hives, so no need to breed bees :)
