Aside from the facade usage, putting the gravel into a Railcraft Rock Crusher gives you sand, with a small chance of gold nuggets or diamonds. It's not a lot, but it can be a nice bonus.

NosePicker, way to be rude. Un0Du0, unfortunately I don't know about the Secret Room mod being included in the FTB pack. It wasn't part of the 1.2.5 pack, and I haven't seen anything about it being included in 1.4.5. Where did you hear about its inclusion?

If you use a silk touch pick or rockcutter on the ore, you can macerate it into two dusts, which, when centrifuged, gives slightly more materials. That is (afaik) the most efficient result.

If possible, could the posts that detail what mods were updated in a given pack update include links to the changelog/wiki/main forum thread for that mod? It's useful to know the mods that were updated, and their version numbers, but for those less willing to go digging, it'd be nice to have...

If you're willing to make it more complex, you can squeeze the apples for juice and mulch, and then run the mulch, water and dirt into a carpenter, and create humus there. This also has the upside that you get juice for biomatter/fuel.

You can get a blast furnace before you find diamonds. Get iron (or tin, if that's enabled) buckets, obsidian cast a portal, find a nether fortress, gather materials. I generally have horrible luck finding diamonds, so I go for steel so I can have the electric tools as soon as possible.

You could go old school vanilla and make air bubbles by placing ladders on underwater walls, wooden doors on underwater floors and fence posts on underwater ceilings. Any of those will create an air bubble that will refresh your breath, though if you remove them you will leave odd currents...
