Are you trying to make an xp farm or just to get ender pearls? If all you want is pearls, then just make a shaft that is 9x9 and about 40-50 tall/deep/which ever (maybe less) with the spawner 3 blocks below the ceiling and water all around and just to double make sure they don't teleport out...
