From what I have found, naturally occuring tainted lands are always reverted to a plains biome. You will have to explore blood magic or thaumcraft to change biome types.

I am submitting an update to Hubris that should go live tonight or tomorrow that will back port the climate control version to fix clients being unable to connect to servers.

Make sure a catalyst isn't beneath the pool, I believe it only needs a simple mana pool. Yes, thaumcraft adds a few ways. Aura Cascade also creates passive mobs for you.

The lack of mobs is something I have been wrestling with forever. Tainted lands do not naturally spawn vanilla mobs - only the tainted mobs such as the spiders taintacles or swarms. I disabled the swarms specifically as they were the most frustrating mob ever. I still do not have a solution as...

I tried to include atleast one quest for every mod that wasn't self explanatory - when in doubt just search the mod in NEI and poke around a few recipes.

Yes there is a quest section for equivalent exchange - keep progressing in aura cascade to unlock it.
