I use 4gb and it works fine for the version on the launcher. I have the same problem you have when I try to update all the mods. Some mods work, but suddenly the world crash when I try to create a new world or load up an old one. I try to fix this major problem and that is why the update is delayed.

You can get lucky and get seeds in reward bags. You can also find huge golem like statues made completly out of hay bales, that you just can turn into wheat, then seeds. Finding a village is also a possibility.

You can eat 5 food with 100% nutrition. You have to eat 125 in a cycle. It is not at all too much if not too little. With all the different foods from pams, it is so easy with little effort. I am also not sure if I should give more food in rewards. Some people are saying more, some saying less...
