Yeah, I went with lots of cyclics myself (wasn't using a smeltery) - If you can pull the schematic out of a cyclic via itemducts, and find a way to round robin insert them back, you could cut it down to a single cyclic. Not sure if that's doable though.

Yeah, they do wear out, but an igneous extruder, cyclic assembler and a decent supply of sticks gets you infinihammers, so not too hard to keep going :) It's a pain finding a way to stop the igneous filling up the cyclic though - no rationing pipes, until you get to thaumcraft items.

You could, of course, just hammer the cobblegen, and skip a step :) (Also, hammering it directly goes straight to your inventory without the whole cobble flying all over the place thing).

Netherack on fire is the best (but you need one extra block height (i.e. don't put the crucible right on top of the netherrack)), but lava is good too, if you haven't got netherrack

What kind of workaround? The ore gravel and ore sand won't go into the pulveriser since a recent update.

Quite a lot actually, One igneous feeds at least 12 crucibles and 5 magmatics from that without issue, as well as supplying all my ore systems with cobble

You can pulverise the block dust form only, so Iron Ore Dust etc. You still have to get it to that stage :)

Actually, I used 27 cyclics, but only 4-5 pulveriser/redstone furnace pairs. 4 autonomous activators (2 pairs) were enough to keep up with the hammering duties. Bear in mind, I'm only using one igneous to feed all of this - if I needed more initial cobble/sand/dust, then the activators would...
