I just grab my backpacks (miner, builder, digger, thaumcraft) and a few picks and hit the caves. With a builders backpack full of torches and set to resupply, you can light up caves for days without fumbling around with your inventory.

I'm pretty relaxed and tend to get on well with others.
I found it to be much easier to set up an early automated system with TE than with IC2. Being able to configure inputs/outputs and have machines transfer items between themselves (without pipes or engines) really helps with early expansion and resource processing.
It would appear that the new trees added in ExtraBiomes cannot be processed in the sawmill either. I now have a huge stack of redwood logs that I was hoping to run through the sawmill for the output bonus.
Aqueous Accumulators require no power at all. They are fantastic for providing water to engines in area where space is limited and work very well when you have a source block of water on either side.
For me it was some of the more simplistic things that have the greatest impact. I love the mini-map, waypoint system, and the inventory tweaks. Not having to open your inventory every time you break a tool is a godsend when you have some serious mining to do. Rei's mini-map just keeps me on...
