On topic, modded is definitely the way to go. Vanilla is cool, and when I first started out, I was all about cool redstone contraptions. But after a while, it became stale, so I turned to mods and haven't gone back to vanilla since.

Apparently, I like making things that work, but look terrible, then tearing them down to make them into better-looking things that aren't functional. :\
