XL Biomes and You

So thought I would post and get some feedback on how you find the spawn rates and how they change as your strip mine hits a new biome.

Currently I live in a small desert surrounded by a redwood forest, then snow/ice biomes that then span out to jungles and back to deserts, so far.

I can't find any air shards ever, I have to travel to another mine or find a fresh ravine, never found any strip mining.
I find very little diamonds when I am under the redwood biome. I have had a total of about 40 diamonds over all and have an iron chest full of bars.
Stupid amount of copper everywhere above level 40.

How is your map layed out and how you finding the spawns!

To be honest I have disabled all the Epic tree biomes. Not becuase of resource issues as I never had a problem finding shards or diamonds. But becuase DAMN leaf decay lag can be a pain and one lightning storm can just wreck your frame rate for days. So yeah I just remove all them huge trees.

As a side if anyone can take a peek and the code and confrim this but I think disabled biomes in XL Biomes get replaced by oceans. I have sooooooo many oceans since disableing the trees. Though this might just be the randomness of a random seed.

In my latest map I got an OP spawn. I spawn on the border of a swamp, forest, and mini jungle. Very close to the spawn point is a witch's hut that's about 1 chunk away from a TC3 treasure hill. Going into the mini jungle from there leads to a set of obsidian totems with a chest containing a portal gun in it (and wisp spawner). In my test version I also checked the nether and although the spawning location for the portal was precarious it was also very close to a fortress.

It's just bad luck on your seed. Taking the biomes out just reduces the number of possible biomes therefore making it more likely to have oceans.

Do XL biomes mess with diamond and resource gen? Is Biomes'O'Plenty a better mod to use?

ExtraBiomesXL (by itself) doesn't mess with resource spawn at all except for oil in desert and wasteland type biomes. It only determines the height, temp, humidity, top 3 layers of ground and whatever spawns above it.

As for which is better, that's something you can only decide for yourself. EBXL is already set up to work with the mods in FTB, but if you're not afraid to do some configuration, BOP has alot of very striking and unique biomes.

I am thinking about switching to try it out. I currently have about 182 mods SMP enabled on my server and am running through debugging now. I'm not really sure what the differences are between those mods at this point.

in mindcrack, if you use the seed "baconfuck" you spawn next to oil, a TH3 dungeon, a ravine with lava and resources, in a huge flat plains field, next to water, with jungle and winter biomes near and lots of clay in the water.

I will once I can get on, but no promises on how it spawns for you :X

This.

Remember the seed mostly handles the map but that some parts of mods are semi random post seed generation. And while a lot of things will be in the same place they will not always be the same exact way.

I posted the seed here. As noted there can be quite a bit of spawning diversity - I haven't managed to get another portal gun to spawn in about 5 more tries - but do note that if you choose to spawn the bonus chest or not it will change some of the world gen enough to have a major impact. Even without getting lucky though there are plenty reasons to work with the seed from various angles, so no matter what your goal is you should be able to appease yourself using the seed. just be careful of the quicksand in the Mini Jungle :p

Edit: Do note, the witch's hut alone is pretty darn worth it since it has a decently sized aura node and a free cauldron.

thanks a lot, everything except the portal gun spawned exactly as you described it!
(and I was really hoping for the pgun early game too, oh well :p)

No. Biome generation proceeds normally as per vanilla, and then ExtraBiomes replaces the biome with a different but similar biome. I.e. a plains may become a meadow or shrubland.

If you look at your seed in AMIDST, you should see the same biome shapes and borders.
