So after a couple days we finally found an enderman that actually had an eye on it. So weve made a world anchor.

We have a stable bright flat forest Age of myst. Have a rail system laid out just in simple loop on the same chunk as the anchor. anchor is just sitting on the ground. We have two carts, 1 a simple wooden hull with a seat on it, so we can watch the logger run.

The logger has the biggest hull, a big solar plant on it, a wood cutter, 1 side chest, 3 internal chests.

The problem is this.. The wood cutter will drive under a tree and then stop doing anything, no cutting off of leaves, unless i manually go punch the leaves over its head.

Its there a way to either modify the current logger, or will we need to build another one with another engine? or is there a way to build a boiler or something to keep it full of power to compleate the cycle? The current rail is only within a single chunk. once can keep it running will be expanding to the full 9 chunks of the rail system.. Any advice? Also wondering if the Anchor needs to be powered..

you will need to build another one :( sorry this was my mistake the first time i built one also if you do a cargo manager you can set it up to drop off wood extra sapling and then refuel with wood for fuel provided you have enough wood production. happy logging and sorry for your loss

the solarpanel is blocked by the leaves. You should make a wagon with am ordinary, coal-powered engine. Currently there is no way to modify a cart.

reg coal engine tree cutter and 4 internal storage
fair warning keep a eye out for thieving enderman they stole my steve cart logger[DOUBLEPOST=1356251393][/DOUBLEPOST]you can also put in a fertilizer but i myself wouldn't worry about it

i played around some on creative and even with 2 solar engines the regular one(large top mounted) and the compact one(side mounted) it runs out of power from time to time in a normal world so an extra coal engine is needed ofc the coal engine can easily be powered by the tree farm itself by simply telling the cargo manager to restock the fuel in the cart and keeping the coal engine on low priority

Go ahead and include a Solar Engine along with the Coal Engine. Make the Solar Engine a higher priority and it will boost your fuel efficiency a little. If that's something you care about in this case.

I did go ahead and slap on the solar engine as well as the fertilizer I just want to see if it can gather vanilla wood for us while we build some fun projects without having to worry about resources :) It really bites to be in the mids of something and have to go get wood for a piston or 20. Thanks for the quick responces, honestly I didnt expect anything till tomarrow at the soonest.

How does the cargo manager work?

Edit: Figured a use for the solar wood cutter could be for being the engine in a endless flat desert mistworld, so its not totally wasted, and the diamonds on the cutter look pritty impressive :)

Got it, The only thing i dont get about the cargo manager is the symbols that looks like -|- or =} next to the color select for each section.

Edit: also added colorizor and torch placer since i had sooo much hull space available still. even built it has 270 or so hull space open. Could have gotten away with the mid level hull. too bad there is no differance in hull graphics. ;( 19 more minutes till its done assembling.

would be really nice to have a light sensor that could tell a solar power'd engine when it was getting dark up ahead, then stop the engine and let it charge to full before continuing... ah well.

Coal engine running on wood works wonders in this situation. Same can be said for mystcraft wooden tendrils worlds, along with bridgers and track placers and such.

PS: The symbols mean "continue in the same direction after managing, or turn around and go back the way you came"

Thank you all for the help, this is one of the nicest and most helpfull game forums ive ever been to. I appriceate it.

This thing is soo much fun, i cant wait till i start tinkering more with other hulls and combos. and BC pipes to route stuff into proper bins, but i blew thru my diamond allocation today upon the desert travel hull.

Couldn't you surround the top of the track completely in glass to prevent leaves from growing over it but not stop the solar engine from working? I'm not too familiar with steve's carts, but any other solar panel would work fine that way.

Edit: Just tested this in the 1.4.2 pack, works just fine through glass. Just build it up high enough that the leaves can't get over it and your current cart should work fine.

Double Edit: Apparently I lied or something, it suddenly stopped working after running for a minute or so no problem. Not sure what is going on.

Triple Edit: I'm dumb, it stopped working because it was night >.>

Here's a good little tree farm I've set up.
The main set up: The cart: The Cargo Manager:

Underground: The Cargo Distributor:
2012-12-23_11.01.40.png 2012-12-23_11.01.51.png

Basically just make a loop with the tracks and at one point set up a Cargo Manager with Advanced Detector rails on three sides. Inside the Cargo Manager I have the red sides set up to take the carts inventory, the blue to keep the coal engine stocked with fuel, and the green side to provide saplings. The cart keeps its internal sapling buffer full so the green side isn't exactly needed and the fuel side isn't either because I put 3 stacks of coal coke in the cart and its been running forever now but I had the space so might as well right?

Now comes the part that can seem very confusing, the Cargo Distributor. From what I can glean its used to pump items into or out of specific sides of the Cargo Manager. So in this set up the wooden pipe will be extracting from the purple side of the Distributor so I set the purple side to synch up with the red side of the Manager, which in my set up is the top left, bottom left, and from the cart options inside the Distributor. Just drag the icons as needed to the colour of the side you will be pumping out of. then just pipe it all towards an ender chest and voila! Much lower maintenance tree farm than from Forestry.

Hope this helps you out a bit because it took me ages to sort through it all myself.

I have ended up making a tree farm myself, and while it works great I don't want it constantly running. But would rather not have to spend fuel to let my compactsolar/coal engine cart stay powered. is there any block or rail I can place that would make it so that the cart would still still and let the solar cell charge up?

The cart can run on wood. Set the cart manager to feed some of the wood back into the system and let the rest be pumped out. Between that and solar the system is perpetual. I've had one running for a month with 0 human intervention.

I think that you can use the advanced detection rail to hold the cart in standby. My advice (from what I've had working):
Cart contains:
1) Standard engine
2) Solar panel (anything above small, small will work, but it'll struggle)
3) Wood cutter
4) Storage (of some sort)

It can contain other things, too, but those are fundamental. Lay out your tree farm, and sort it out in the standard way, have the cart extract it's cargo to a cargo manager. Have the manager set to extract from the storage, and put back into the engine (this is key).

Feel free to extract from the manager to further processing, but nothing faster than an autarchic gate (redstone engines are fine, sorting machines are not). Fill the fuel slots of the cart with wood. Ensure that there is at least 1 (preferably 5+) log in each slot.

Let the cart run. It'll unload to the cargo manager each lap, and take the wood into it's engine. You still get a surplus, but it's an easy way of counteracting the issue of the solar panels. This works provided that your extraction doesn't take the wood out of the manager before the cart gets to it's refuelling stage.
