I'm planning out my processing systems linked to my sorting system, so I can ensure I'm getting things right in my head and design before I start building the machine components, energy infrastructure and getting my paint cans out.

Here are 3 shots of the area. Everything is in a fairly compact(ish) space to add to the challenge.

At the very back where the tube goes to the 7 netherrack, this will be my pulversizer and smelting area. Same setup as Direwolf20s Lets Play. Resulting Ingots get fed back to the chest, and then sorted. This I'm happy with.

The next tube going along the ceiling, and finishing between the 2 netherack blocks on the ceiling is for Wood Logs. They go into 2 Relays. The theory here is that my logs get split 50/50. The relay at the back sends the logs back into the tube system for storage. The relay at the front sends the logs to the 5 netherrack which is a sawmill setup. Processed planks and sawdust out the bottom and back to the chest and sorting.

The final tube (on the left on the ceiling) is set for other wooden items that I want to "recycle" to raw wood/dust.

What I'm not too sure about is the 2 relays. I need to have 2 equal distance containers, and also be able to eject from the containers. Relays sound like just the thing to save fiddling around with chests, transposers/filters and timers. But I've never used them before.

Is my thinking sound, or am I going to hit problems?

TIA

Relays would be a good choice there, I think. I've used them before like that, place equidistant to something in order to split the distribution, then the remaining tubes from there to the next destinations can be any length. And as you said, no need for timers and other junk.

You don't need a relay to split items 50/50. Any RP device, even a transposer, connected in-line will be counted as a valid destination.

I.e. something like

Code:
        (tube) (transposer) (5 tubes) (chest)
(input) (tube)
        (tube) (transposer) (10 tubes) (chest)

would still split items evenly.

Trouble is, the transposer would require a redpower signal to spit out items, which means throwing a timer into the design. Unless I'm wrong ofc :D

Transposers don't need a timer when placed inline, in fact they close when receiving a redstone signal. Basically they act like a valve where "rs signal off" = open and "rs signal on" = closed.

Ah, excellent, that reduces the cost of the build a bit.

whenever I want to test out a build I just make a test world, and end up spending more time making it more compact.
I have been using relays the whole time with the thermal expansion machines, the relays work great to get the output into tubes

Here's the setup that I finally got working after a lot of experimenting:
system4.jpg

Sorting machine assigns yellow to any unsorted item. Furthermost tube to my barrel storage area is set to yellow.

Wood Logs go down the green pipe, and split evenly between a transposer and a filter. The filter repaints it's logs to Yellow, so they can get stored into the barrel area. A panel is placed on the side of the filter to ensure that the tube distances are equal.

Lime green tube is for other wooden items to get recycled in the sawmill.

White pipe is for the ores to be pulverized and then smelted.

Unpainted restriction tube allows for all overflow and unknown items to be sent to another chest for futher processing (in time).

Now to get the sawmills and smelters built, power this all up, and let it rock and roll.

I am sorry, I have no idea what machine is which in your texture pack. I hope it works for you. :)

Not surprising, my texture pack is a right old mixture (Misa, Battered Old Stuff, Sphax, others and my own work).

Here's the same scene, but with default textures (yuck :p)

Now I've finally got all the machines in place, and a conduit system, it's really nice seeing this sorting & processing system go. Now to process the sawdust that is being produced, and get an automated tree farm up and running. Really want a quarry, but finding diamonds is hard work on this map. I think I've found a total of 8, even with a load of branch mining...
