Will the 1.6 version packs really need new worlds?

Unfortunately I'm not following the development that closely, since my server is only for friends and family, but I read this info on reddit.

Is it really true? If yes, does anyone have information about when these packs will be released (matter of days, weeks, months?).

No one knows for sure. 6-8 weeks is a good open ended expectation

Require new worlds, not necessarily, depending on what happens really, the lack of redpower is the main talking point, if it isn't in 1.6 then you will most likely need to do a world reset in order to remove the red power blocks that will be in the world and to generate an new features, such as ores. But theoretically, it would still be possible to run the server on the old map. Long story short, nobody really knows. However, if your worried about losing creations you could always resort to world edit (just don't take any non vanilla blocks with it)
