I've done both of these things on my new quarry setup and it's looking good. I actually forgot to place the second water block for my Aqueous Accumulator before I encased the engines in obsidian, and one of them blew up after a couple of minutes lol...good test though. It only knocked out the engines, the quarry, and a couple of pieces of pipe. All of my chests/barrels were intact so that was great. I'm going to stick with this setup; although I do need to break the casing to refuel the engines at about 2/3 of the way through, a few blocks of obsidian is no big deal.

If Thermal Expansion is installed, then I would suggest using magmatic engines.

I'm dedicated to using fuel for my power, I want to avoid using lava. Pumping infinite amounts of it from the Nether just seems too easy to me...not to mention I need to provide a source of lava for the engines and that's more resources/space/time when using fuel is a lot more efficient and doesn't require anything besides the engine and the Aqueous accumulator to cool them.

I suppose I could just pump fuel into the engines from an ender tank, but even that seems like unnecessary infrastructure when I only need to fill them twice before moving the entire operation. I really should look into making fuel cells to make filling the engines easier/quicker, but for now I'm OK using buckets. I have portal guns so I can access the fuel tank in my base really easily.

Seems like a good setup! :D

Forget the pump, what you need is an Aqueous Accumulator. With two source blocks of water nearby it will cool three engines(I've only tested up to three). No wooden pipes needed, it pushes water out automatically. Also doesn't need power.

If you want to get really fancy, craft yourself a Redstone Energy Cell and place it between you conductive pipe and right up against the quarry. When the quarry is done all additional energy is safely stored inside of it so nothing explodes.

Yep, I've adopted the Accumulator and I love it. Easy to set up, cuts fuel costs by 25% and I'll never have to worry about the water source "drying out". Good good good.

Zyrax,

I too struggled with combustion engines at first but now I have mastered them. You have two things to worry about with them exploding. First being running out of coolant. An Aqueous Accumulator will fix that. It will output enough water for 4 engines running at max temperature. Since you are also in Thermal Expansion take a look at using liquiducts for the water and fuel lines as they will move a lot more liquid.

The other problem with combustion engines is if they don't have anything to power they will build up energy and then explode. Once the quary stops digging energy will build up in the engines and then they will explode. To fix this use redstone energy conduits. They will continue to accept energy from engines and avoid that nasty build up issue. They come at a cost though, the entire redstone energy conduit network will consume 5% of your MJ output, but it is worth it for a set and forget deployment.

For moving items and fuel Tesseracts, again from Thermal Expansion will help you here for a remote quary.

Using these I have never had a combustion engine explode ever again.
