I've been playing Minecraft for a long time, started way before the first Beta release. Recently, though, I've been getting into modpacks because... well... Minecraft has gotten a bit boring. I've played a little of the FTB Ultimate and Mindcrack packs, but they really haven't been what I thought they'd be. So, what other packs should I play, and what makes them fun?

There are the successors to Ultimate, Unleashed and Unhinged, the former has most of the mods Ultimate had and then some, choose that one if you like lots of tech and magic toys to play with/Tinkers Construct, Unhinged has a lot less mods and includes Gregtech, choose that one if you think grinding for countless hours just to get your first iron pick is fun, never tried any of the other packs in the launcher but DW20 is popular.
I'd recommend the Brony Pack. It's got bronies & you can be a bro and build stuff.
It's like vanilla but worse
If you're getting into modpacks, play with FTB Unleashed. It has more mods than Unhinged and you can actually use all of them. Have fun.
If I may plug my own mod pack, ShneekeyCraft is designed specifically for people new to modded minecraft. It uses a minimalist approach to adding mods, only runs on a single energy network, and introduces you to plenty of concepts so you can get going. You can get access to it by clicking on the 'private pack' button and typing in ShneekeyCraft (caps sensitive).
Once you get yourself more figured out with Minecraft mods I highly recommend making your own modpack.
I play ultimate, since I'm not worried about updating past 1.4.7.
Look up Thaumcraft 3, Buildcraft, Thermal Expansion, Factorization, Industrial Craft2 and Minefactory Reloaded for starters. It's quite a bit, but the content of these modpacks are huge.
