I started FTB back in January or so with the Mindcrack pack which had Gregtech. I had never played anything other than Vanilla before, so my first experience with FTB was with Gregtech. I didn't find it difficult to learn at all. I found it frustrating that there was a bunch of make this, but first make this to make this, then oh wait, you need to make this to make this to make this, etc, but that's not really limited to GT.

I say, try different packs and stick with the one you like, or alternatively, go to the wiki, find out what mods are in each pack, read up on the mods, and play the pack that has the most of the mods that interest you.

I at first thought greg tech was a disaster. I hated how it changed IC2 tool recipies. It changed a ton of how mods intereact. Then I found out how to disable 99 percent of the hard stuff in greg tech. Now I actually kind of like the silly mod. It adds a mid and end game that is needed imo. What it does that is really good is allowing dusts to work with different mods. Making ingots one type (one type of bronze etc) The main reason why I say ultimate is the best because they added in PC mods. IE MFR, Flat bedrock, powerconverters. They also added tube stuff.. So I am really pleased with the ultimate pack.

right... i would still appreciate if someone could point out (link) the best wiki for gregtech because it seems to change quite a bit so i want to read up on it before i decide whether to play it normal, play it with easy recipes or not use it at all.

None of the GregTech wikis are kept completely in-date, so someone writing a comprehensive guide might actually be a good idea. GregTech isn't as hard as people believe it to be as whilst it nerfs a lot of existing content, it also adds a lot of other content so that you end up being relatively much more powerful at each stage of progression in the tech tree, then adds an additional stage on top of that such that mastering GregTech gives you a phenomenal amount of options at your disposal.

The problem is that most people aren't aware of the ways to grease the wheels, most of these features are undocumented. ;)

Exactly, 99% There are a few changes that you cant turn off, like the scaffold and tin buckets nerf. Neither of those matter to much to me but the fact that you can't disable them makes me avoid the mod altogether. Maybe next update he will remove the vanilla crafting recipe for planks and you can only make them with the holy planks of sengir recipe. And maybe he won't even add an option to turn it off
