Well long story shot, I'm going to be starting a youtube series playing through the FTB Horizons mod pack. The reason I'm doing this is because I have played the more technical ones a decent amount (Ultimate, Unleashed, Monster), but have always stuck pretty closely with getting as far as possible with Buildcraft or Industrialcraft, and then as I don't know much about the other mods the world just kind of... fizzle out.

I want to do something different, and feel I can do that decently with periodic looks at the wiki, but the problem is as I always start with either IndustrialCraft or Buildcraft, I don't know where the normal starting point with Horizons is. Which mod do I focus on in the beginning to then branch out when I require other stuff from other mods?

Try Rotarycraft... it's book is very helpful and it seems to be the way to go with tech in Horizons.

Ars Magicka plus Thermal Expansion makes for quite a good start. Ars gets you the touch dig spell, which nets you the resources to make Thermal expansion stuff without burning through a bunch of picks, but at the same time gaining more Ars XP. Alternately, Tinkers plus Engineer's Toolbox is a good one. Engineer's is also good when paired with Thermal Expansion, but that gets pretty expensive on redstone.
