I am restarting FTB and thinking about which pack i should choose. And an important question is how long which pack will "live" and how often it gets updated when a single mod offers a new version.
So which packs do you think are and will be always up to date?

Really, any, as long as their corresponding team/ person keep in touch with the FTB team.

Altho technically ultimate could be the one supported the longest, it could also be the one with the shortest lifespan, simply because of the amount of mods it has and needs to update.
At this point its really not possible to tell, I'd say just pick any, like most things, this is something you don't really need to worry about in the near future.

Personally I'd say that the packs being used by various youtubers (Mindcrack\DW20) are probably the ones that will have the greatest staying power simply due to the amount of exposure they get apart from the challenge map pack which may or may not be usable in a normal survival world.

As far as updates goes I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as FTB is still a going concern the packs will be updated and it doesn't show any real signs of going anywhere for quite a while yet.

Ultimate will probably be the most stable pack in the long term because it will update the least frequently. Just look at Tekkit Classic - old as hell now but still works perfectly fine.

The packs all need to transition to 1.5 after this week anyway. There will probably be one last pack version for all the packs to update to the final mod versions for 1.4.7, then the transition will begin.

This could take about a month, it depends how seriously 1.5 breaks mods. It looks like the most serious changes are to do with the new texture system in 1.5. The next pack update will probably be the last one for a while.

E: Re-read this post, hated the crappy grammar, fixed the crappy grammar.

In my opinion is actually backwards, they will update ultimate as fast as possible to keep up to date, in mindcrack: oh, a bug that crashes the game? Meh, thats ok, fixing in like a week or two, they can wait. In ultimate: a bug? WTFZOMG FIX DAT NAO!!!!11!!!!ONE!!!!1!!ELEVEN!!!!!

And the same with new features.

I would think dw's would only last as long as his current lp. Once he starts a new season he'll have a different pack with some new mods plus the standards.

I don't think he will remove the ones that are already in.

FTB cannot make any promises or guarantees about the Mindcrack or Direwolf20 packs, because while we compile and maintain the packs for those groups, they are at the convenience of those folks. The FTB Ultimate Pack is meant as our main offering, and might possibly be the pack we build the next FTB map off of. THIS IS A MAYBE, AND NOT FIRMLY DECIDED UPON.

As for updating individual mods in the packs - we work very hard at making sure all mods in a pack are up to date with stable versions. We will not update to mods that have clear problems off the bat, and we do our best to test the mods in their particular mix before they go live. To give some continuity, except for problems that we consider to be absolute emergency situations, we only update our packs on Mondays. So, if you see a new version of a mod you can't wait to try out in the pack try to have patience til then. :)
