So I just spent a good long while breeding some Emerald Bees. However, none of the Emerald Combs seemed to drop anything in a centrifuge. I found a wiki which says they drop Emerald Dust in a centrifuge, and when I looked that up it said that it was a Gregtech item. I don't have Gregtech installed (I'm playing Direwolf20). Did I just spend a long time breeding some absolutely useless bees?

If so, does anyone have a link or list to what bee species require Gregtech so I don't make the same mistake again? Either to breed them in the first place, or to properly make use of their products?

Hmm, interesting... I play with the Mindcrack mod pack with GregTech and ExtraBees disabled, and I was planning on reenabling ExtraBees and trying it out. Maybe there are some configuration options in ExtraBees that need to be changed to make it work without GregTech (like, say, adding its own tiny piles of dust instead of using GregTech's ones)? Just a guess, but I'll play with it later tonight and let you know what I find out.

Emerald bees should produce emeralds directly, if Gregtech is not installed (as far as I know). The dropchance from the centrifuge is just lower than 100%. If you don't get anything after 100 combs, you're either very unlucky, or there is really a problem. What dropchance do you get, when you view the usage of the emerald comb in NEI? (Remember to apply the bugfix at http://forum.feed-the-beast.com/threads/get-your-forestry-recipes-here.10885/#post-129109 or else you won't see a thing.)

Ok, so I went into singleplayer creative, and gifted myself a stack of Emerald combs, and sure enough there's a low chance for actual Emeralds. I must be just having terrible luck in SMP.

Do most extrabees species work that way? That is to say, without gregtech installed, they just have a lower chance of providing the resource directly? Are there any that are truly useless without GregTech?

A tiny dust is equivalent to a 25% drop rate of the full item, except that dusts themselves are 4:3 to convert to actual gems, so the combs-dropping-actual-gems works out about the same

There are several that will be completely useless without GregTech, or more likely will never mutate at all. Bauxite, Pyrite, etc.

You do know that a Centrifuge is a different machine from the Industrial Centrifuge, right?

Of course, the point was that by default these combs produce tiny dusts which are GregTech items and not in the game if you have GregTech disabled/not installed. It's been solved though, if you don't have GregTech installed it seems they drop the normal item just at a small drop rate that it took me a while to realize was happening at all. Nothing to do with Industrial Centrifuges.

I enabled ExtraBees yesterday and had a look in the recipe list. There were definitely a few combs listed that didn't produce any resources at all (bauxite and pyrite as mentioned, also iridium for some reason, maybe a couple of others), but most of them looked like they should work without GregTech. There's finally a (temporary) NEIPlugins release that supports Forestry 2.x, so you can take a look at the centrifuge recipes to see what the combs will produce. See the tiny link toward the top of this page: https://bitbucket.org/mistaqur/nei_plugins/wiki/Home

Oh sweet, that should make things a lot easier.

Thanks again for all your help.
