When the cat's away, the mice will play? (spammers?)

When the cat's (in this case mods) are sleeping, the mice (spammers) will play?

Just a trend I have noticed, and not sure if that is true or not. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. Just gets annoying when 3/4 of the page is spammers advertising this, that, or the other thing. There a way to deal with this garbage?

I ignore them. They are always gone by the next time I visit the site.
