Have you considered chunkloading the area?

Things to try:

Make sure you have a backup of your world.
(if things break and you want to revert to 1.3.0 - a backup is good to have)

Do you have the same issue if you update to version 1.4.0 of the pack?

the server i am playing on has a large amount of people and not a lot of resources so chunkloading has been completely disabled. have not tried updating to 1.4 of the pack as it is not a full release only beta

Have there been other changes on that server as well?
Is the server running the provided files in the server zip-file or is it running sponge (other software that can handle plugins)?

The server is a plain dw20 1.12 server nothing special and there have been no changes besides disabling ftbutils chunk loading claiming is set to 16 per player

As a test - ask the server admin to load your chunks where the AE is - and if it doesn't crash anymore - then you know that the cause is.
