My setup may be absurd, but it gets the job done and does it fairly well. I use towers of generators that are constantly fed blaze rods from my overworked blaze rod farms. I have 2 towers ATM, they each have 10 layers that each power an MFE that sends down energy separately. So that's 1280 EU/t per tower, I believe. They always have extra blaze rods also, which I either macerate then centrifuge and send on a process to make diamonds or macerate then recycle for my scrap box machine (might be stupid, but it's fun, and my rotten flesh from my zombie xp farm goes there as well :p)

Favorite? Fuel. Dat yellow stuff is amazing.
Base power? Sugarcane, tree, and wheat farms for biofuel, sustained by dirt, to power two Liquid 36HP boilers. Excess MJ to MFFS to a Forcicium cell. For IC2 power, Solars on SMP or Nuclear for SSP.
Compact base? Instead of boilers, electric engines set to 5 MJ/t slowly replenishing a large buffer of Energy Cells. Considering making an entire roof of BT batteries and solars to power BT engines instead.

Does anybody know the MJ value for RP Blutricity Engines? I'm currently going on with some biofuel engines, but since I have plenty of nikolite and plenty of strings, I could easily set up a RP MJ production facility, but I'm not sure if it's worth or not.

From what I'm reading right now, it's 30 MJ/t max at the cost of 50 kW, so lots and lots of power for a handfull of MJ

I always think I'm going to do something different, but thus far I have always just used lava from the Nether. I keep meaning to try out this bio stuff, but just never get to it... Lava with generators and MFEs fits my power needs so well...

My personal favorite is a deployer / filter / item detector / liquid transposer team that automagically milks a cow and then supplies that milk to biogas engines. You can run so. many. engines. I'll probably either upgrade or at least supplement with lava eventually, though.

how good are liquid boilers? i have a solid one being fed scrap from tons of recyclers

Liquid boilers are a great source of MJ, as soon as they have hit max heat.
Methane from GregTech? Only in a boiler. Fuel/biofuel? If your boiler has a size of 18+, it will be more efficient than combustion engines. Creosote? Don't bother (One bucket per ~10 seconds).

ok thanks i think ill try that in creative because solid fueled boilers use a lot of room and mats to make its nice but i prefer something more compact

Three words... BIG ASS BOILER :)

I have almost completed a 32 unit tower of power (Magmatics) for MJs, and Geos for EU.. will keep adding layers until my lava transport system is overwhelmed with just 1 pump (16 magmatics and 8 geo's so far).

next.. use the biofuel I'm making and the 1000 stacks of cane ina HP boiler.

Mine is blaze rods. Burns longer than coal, and are very easy to get with just a jetpack, some diamonds, and a soul stealer enchant. I offered blutricity for producing EU and MJ, but learned I would need 600 solars or something insane like that to fully power 1 blutric engine. Divide by 28 if I used all windmills, and I still need 22 of them, plus an automatic string farm big enough to autocraft the sails, and someway to auto replenish the windmills when the finish.

Now I'm trying a blaze fueled boiler, a Tier 5 spawner can easily supply a LP 2x2x3 boiler. I'm now pushing it to the limit to see what's the biggest boiler it can keep at full heat.

Bluelectric engine produces 32MJ/t at max speed but insane power draw. Be fine if you have a large battery box buffer setup for on demand power. As it is supposed to intelligently throttle it's output, it can be rather variable.

my favorite power source.

Greasy, Grimy, Polluting, Slick, Yellow Goodness that is BC fuel.

600,000 MJ in a combustion engine at 6 MJ/t
300,000 EU in a petrogen at 25 EU/t

1 bucket sustains a 36H boiler for around 5 minutes for around 800,000 MJ at 144 MJ/t, EU goes to 1,200,000 EU at 200 EU per tick.

do not know why you'd want to use anything else :D

6060.6 ticks, or 303 seconds, which is 5 minutes and 3 seconds going with 20 ticks a second, give or take a few decimal points. So yea, you were very close.

More people would probably use fuel if it was easily sustainable. As it is you have to go out and find new wells when one dries up, so more people turn to other setups so they can limit they time they spend searching for fuel to do other things instead.

Having said that, I would definitely want to keep a stockpile of black and yellow gold around just in case since it can really help when heating up new boilers.

I never knew you could burn blaze rods at all...this is a remarkable revelation.. along with the infernal furnace (thaumcraft) I think I might make a fully blaze powered base...

Mine was netherrack -> magma crucibles -> magmatic engines, but I expect to come up with a better system once I get into using more of the mods.

For IC2, my favorite's probably the geothermal generator. Fairly easy to make, good EU output, and you can keep a nice-sized bank of em fully fueled with a single full-speed hell pump system.

BuildCraft? Magmatics are pretty nice, and like geothermals, are also decently reliable. However, I have to say that, once you get the infrastructure set up, industrial steam engines are wondrous things to behold. Though, my latest world has some HUGE oil volcanoes, I might try for combustion engines, this go-around.

Red Power? That's a difficult one...kind of a tie between thermopiles and the windmills. If I'm just running a sorting system and a few other odds and ends, a couple of thermopiles usually suffice. But, I'm wondering how big of an automatic flax farm you'd need to create all-you-can-eat windmill replacement parts. Though, windmills do seem to last a fair while. I had one on an earlier map that I'd played on for around 2 weeks, daily, and its durability bar barely even moved by the time some hideous bee-related glitch ate my world.
