Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner. More specifically It's a Saprophytic bracket fungus in the family Laetiporous. Commonly known as chicken of the woods. This particular specimen is my favorite find of last years foray. Pulled about 20 pounds of it from this site.I believe that is a fungus of some sort growing on a mossy log
Ooohhh interesting! I've always wanted to get into botany and things of the like but I can never find the time to properly educate myself on it. A good cooking mushroom though far better if harvested off of hardwood. This particular one was on an old pine, nurse log. But I did get several nice meals out of it and the rest got dried to be used as dye.
I also spiked a couple of broken birch with wedges of flesh and am crossing my fingers as to what I may find over the next few years.
