Hi so i have been with out a working computer for a fair amount of time (well one capable of minecraft) Just got a new gpu and im up and running again! yay.

My first port of call was to update my mod pack to 1.8 (or what ever the latest mod supported minecraft version is now) only all the mods i see are for 1.7.10

What has been the reason for mods not moving up to 1.8? is there some major issue with it.

please dont take this as a "update now!!1111!!!!1!" thread thats not how it is ment, i have just been out of the loop and really curious why 6 or 7 months after the "bountiful" update mods are still on 1.7.10, im guessing there is a reason (hopefully not a lack of interest in minecraft, though i guess that will happen one day)

1.8 has completed changed the render code, and due to this, it isn't exactly a good idea for the larger mods to update. BC, for example, would now take a massive amount of harddrive space due to the changes in render code.

I'm probably a little off on the details, but that's about how it is. Plus, the performance dropped yet again so most authors are staying with 1.7 for now.

Ultimately, it comes down to 1.8 being yet another major code change for modders and, more importantly, FPS drops are pretty huge in this version. Getting reports of 1.8 vanilla having the same FPS as 200+ modded 1.7.10. Not a great thing, as one can imagine. Consequently, quite a bit of the community here on the FTB forums has pretty opted to stick with 1.7.10 for the time being. There are some rare exceptions who have begun modding for 1.8, but it's likely to be a pretty content slim update from the modding community. Mod authors are getting tired of having to rework the code of their mods over and over every major update, and I can't really blame them!

ah i see, ok.

yeah i remember the last big code change was 1.3.2 (i think) when they merged server and client guessing its like that but with the added hassle of fps drop. If i understand it right.

ok thanks guys its appreciated.

I would say that 1.8 is more like 1.3 and 1.5's changes combined, since the former was heavier on logic changes and the latter was heavier on rendering changes, and 1.8 is both. Though it's less the difficulty in updating and more that it and Forge have their share of issues. But the landscape is changing, with cpw back and KingLemming on the team. So when the time is right, and the right changes are made, it might still be a viable platform for the entire community to shift towards.

There are still a number of mods for 1.8 as we speak, but you'd just have to settle for a different experience than you're used to probably. A number of people seem perfectly content with it, so to each his own I suppose!
