Well, think about it in terms of strategy-based games. You can only attack once every x seconds, regardless if you do 9.9 damage, it will still take you two hits to kill something with 10 HP.

Nano saber offers the most efficient DPS. Allowing you to one shot mobs. The next most efficient (imo) is the chainsaw. 5 damage, twice is 10. Unless the mob has more than 10 HP or it is a boss mob (which you should really be using something like a bow to kill), anything in between 5.1-9.9 doesn't offer anymore returns than a weapon at 5 damage. For most vanilla mobs anyways. I am not sure about what's in TF or what the other mod packs add.

Just FYI, the only way I ever 1-shot witches at melee range was with dashing attacks with TiCo longswords or damage amped TiCo battleaxes. So you CAN reach that threshold and one shot the most aggravatingmob in the game.

Well, I just found something interesting. A manyullyn battleaxe with paper rod + binding, electric + maxed nether quartz is listed as doing 9.5 hearts of damage, yet damage indicators says it can do 10.5 hearts. Sure enough, it can 1-shot skeletons, spiders and creepers (not zombies though unfortunately). More importantly it looks better than a nano saber.

Dave, how did you manage to 1-shot a witch with a powered up battleaxe? Don't they have 13 hearts?

I'm speaking from a purely mathematical and strategic purspective lol. It doesn't matter much in FTB. What matters is efficiency, design and engineering. My forte.

Nevermind, all of those are my forte.

I always crit when it gives me a guaranteed one-shot.
I love good old diamond swords for the early game, even sharpness 2 can one shot with a crit and two shot everywhere else, and they last for ages without being recharged.

Fire is actually a downside, because flaming mobs will set you on fire if they hit you, and the damage it does is slow and spread out; if you're hitting something and then waiting ten seconds for it to be finished off by fire damage, you're doing it wrong.

Flaming weapons are also next to useless for farming endermen since they start teleporting all over the place in a mad panic when lit on fire.
