I have the most fun starting the next "phase" of my building. When I start a new world the very first thing I do is set up Tinker's Construct and some iron/gold chests for better storage. (I play Infinity) Once my "smeltery phase" is nearing completion and I am looking towards my next project, this is where I have the most fun. Usually the next "phase" for me is setting up basic ore doubling, quartz grindstone, then sag mill and other basic enderio machines. After that I enter my "energy production phase" with big reactors, solar panels, and the likes. I think it is the satisfaction of completing the previous phase that I really enjoy.

I have recently been playing Vanilla Plus. Manual mining, Farming, fishing, making food and building has been very nice change when compared to automating everything.

Another pack i have been playing is Tolkien Craft II, Trading with NPC for items i need and trying to live off the economy there is fun also.

I like doing the same thing in my tech packs. I like to take screenshots all throughout the progress so I can go back at any time and see what I progressed from. I typically make my first base out of whatever materials I find nearby (I especially like to do this with BoP materials like red rock or bamboo) and stock it with a few furnaces, chests, and all the Tinker's tables, along with a tiny wheat farm. I'll make a set of flint tools and search nearby for a flat area for a permanent base. That's where I set up my smeltery and start delving into metal tools and machines. I usually put my dynamos and generators in the same room as my smeltery. Then I'll either run fluxducts in the floor with clear glass covers or just below the ceiling to my manual machine and crafting room. I'll also make a storage room full of caches/barrels and chests and have itemducts automatically sorting everything I put in. I plan on learning Funky Locomotion soon, at which point I'll have automatic mining to go with the automatic processing. It'll look so cool to have everything from that flowing into my machines and out to my storage.

Basically, my progress goes from "stand and do" everything to "stand and watch" everything.

I like to build and do things that make me feel clever. That sounds pretty egotistical now that I read that.

Not egotistical at all, I completely get it Azzanine. I am in the process of learning AE2 and discovered illuminated panel lights for the first time. I got a wild hair and use them to make a 10 block tall 50 block long Hollywood style sign out of my IGN, Born of Fire, right on top of the mountain I hallowed out for my base. Silly and meaningless, but it made me feel clever.

I actually have a new favorite part of the game now. I love logging in for the first time each day and seeing what kind of exciting items showed up in storage from my quarries the night before. Ooo lookie! 15 draconium! 400 lapis!

I don't get the argument personally... shouldn't everyone be allowed to have fun however they have fun?

Absolutely, but the prevailing dispute is usually not so much whether either scenario is "fun" but simply whether a "grind" can be considered a challenge, or is just a grind.

Moving on, my actual non-dry-humour favorite thing in MC is simply being faced with a difficult technical challenge and managing to overcome it.

I enjoy seeing items going through pipes, machine working and turtles keeping my base fueled and doing the logic behind everything using self made scripts.
(I however must confess that I use @Kaikaku's tree farm script as it does the job very well.)

My absolute favorite thing about Minecraft, especially Modded Minceraft is the endless possibilities. That you can literally do whateveeer you can think of in game (as long as you have the mods). Wanna explore the depths of Hell, Do it, Wanna conquer the Heavens, Sky's the limit. Wanna explore a fantasy world taking down mystical beasts, Go for it. Wanna break the sky limit and explore the deep reaches of space, have fun. I can go on and on. It's whatever YOU want Minecraft to be and because of that, it will always hold a place within me.

For me, it's various things. I like to try and base at least some stuff around different methods each time I'm on a different world (main reason I don't tend to use Tinkers :p). It's sometimes better to have a more restrictive modlist to help with that as well - making a fully automatic Spawner system for a Well of Suffering in Magic World 2 is hands down one of my favourite builds. May have to try and salvage some pictures of it at some point, if I still have the world. I try and build differently too - one time a big tower, another time I built into a cliff face overlooking the sea, another time a city etc.etc.

I also like just wandering out and seeing what neat bits of scenery worldgen's thrown up this time. Probably one of the reasons I'm not too fussed about AE2's meteors - I just pack up plenty of food and go on an adventure :p

Oh hey, I still had the world. So, how to set up a Well of Suffering when you have no easy way to transport and/or spawn mobs? No Safari nets, no Autospawners, no cursed Earth? Forbidden Magic's Wrath Cages came into play here. Basically, they take Essentia to spawn mobs, the essentia needed varies with the mob. I wanted it to be a completely hands-free setup once I set it going, so I needed on-site essentia generation, along with a fuel supply. So I went for the one mob that drops coal - the Wither Skeleton. Hence why I ended up setting it up in the Nether :p

So this was where the magic happened. Drops were collected by an Advanced Item Collector, then fed down a line of hoppers. Filtered hoppers separated the different items out. Golems then shifted bones and coal into the furnaces to generate the essentia. Swords and bows got taken via ender chest to my lavapit of doom :p

The party in full swing :p

The altar itself, with the ritual quite literally built into it.

Automation, setting up systems, and upgrading what I already have into something better and more efficient.

I always get a great sense of joy when I can make my automated creations more efficiently and compact. If I can hide it behind facades or microblocks it's a succes.
I love impressing my servermates by showing my creations. It's that sense of accomplishment

Discovering new and interesting mods is what really keeps me playing. Horizons was a breath of fresh air for me and I put quite some time into that pack. Also, becoming stupidly OP at a late game is always nice
